That’s a wrap on our annual Fall WestFam Academic & Wellness Workshop. This year, for this first time, we held our workshop in Stephenville.

A HUGE thank you to our faculty at this site for all of their time and efforts in delivering a fantastic couple of days of didactic and hands-on learning.

Our Wellness events were sponsored by the ever generous Long Range Family Practice Network and the Western Regional Hospital Foundation. Thanks to you, our residents were able to unwind with a beautiful sunset picnic at Bartlett’s Point and enjoy a social, networking evening at a faculty BBQ. These social and wellness events are SO meaningful and we are so grateful for your support.

On Saturday we had the immense honour and privilege of spending the day on Elder Scott Butt’s land. We spent a beautiful day in nature listening, learning and sharing about the past, present and future of indigenous cultures and practices. It was such a special experience both personally and professionally.

Finally, a special thank you to our incredible Stream APA and WestFam Curriculum Lead and MUN DFM for organizing and executing and supporting this successful event.

West Coast = Best Coast.

Hi! I’m Samantha, one of the new West Fam R1s!

I grew up in Gander and moved to St. John’s to complete an engineering degree and medical school at MUN. After 10 years in town I am so excited to be on the west coast! I chose West Fam because of the amazing medical community, small program size, access to broad scope rural family medicine, and proximity to some of the best outdoor activities in the province. I’m now 3 months in and couldn’t be happier.

When I’m not working you will likely find me reading, knitting, watching a good movie, or going on outdoor adventures with my partner and our border collie Banjo.

I can’t wait to see what the next two years have in store!

New resident bios incoming! First up is Becky Maher🤗

Hi friends - I’m Becky, a first year WestFam resident 🩺

📍I was born & raised in Western NL and feel so fortunate to finally be back home for my residency training.

✨Choosing WestFam was a no brainer for me. I had only heard positive things about the program and how much support they provide. The emphasis placed on work life balance was very important to me.

🌲When I’m not working you can almost always find me outside. I love to garden, paddle board, moose hunt, hike & ski. I love playing hockey, & most recently started playing softball. I have a bookclub that is honestly the best group of gals there is.

🫶🏻 My family is my life. I have a lot of littles who call me Aunt Becky & they make me so proud everyday!

👩🏻‍🎨 Fun fact is I have a small business where I make greeting cards. Putting a smile on people’s faces through cards is something I’ve been doing for decades & I’m fortunate enough to continue through medical school and now residency.

First POCUS scan event with our new machines purchased by the Western Health Foundation! R1 and R2 residents had the opportunity to do scanning under the guidance of Dr. Brittany Bolt, ER physician and WestFam Alum. Huge thank you to our volunteer patients!

Our newest WestFam residents are settling into life here on the West Coast. Last evening they were treated to a complimentary tour of the city and surrounding area courtesy of Rugged Edge! Thank you Melissa and Craig! We love this new annual tradition. Having the warm welcome and support of local businesses can have a meaningful impact on our recruitment and retention efforts for these family docs!

Farewell to our graduating residents! 🥺🎓

We’re so sad to say goodbye to such a great group of residents! These new family doctors have made an incredible impact on health care in Newfoundland throughout their time as resident doctors. The West Coast has been truly fortunate to have you caring for our patients and communities!

WestFam wishes you the best in your next chapter as family physicians and we cannot wait to see all that you’ll accomplish! ♥️
