The hierarchical material arrived today.
It starts with a small cube, which is one. Then a bar of ten, then a square of a hundred, then a cube of a thousand. Then the pattern begins again at a larger scale, and keeps going. A million is a cube a child can barely get her arms around.
This is how the size of numbers arrives in an elementary Montessori classroom. Not as a rule about place value or a row of zeros on a page, but as something you pick up. A child holds the one, then stands next to the million, and the difference between them stops being abstract. The math that follows has somewhere to sit.
Melissa was practising the lesson this afternoon, ahead of term. Our thanks to the young helper who carried the million cube across the room with great seriousness.
