Your privilege will only protect you if you commit to accepting the status-quo...we're better together

People think friendship just happens and because of that they are surprised when they fall apart due to lack of effort, but the truth is, community takes work. And for so many of us, especially in the Black community, that work is about more than just connection. It’s about liberation. Liberation looks like having people who check on you, hold you, and remind you that you don’t have to do life alone. That’s strategic and that’s how we stay well.

Yesterday we were gifted a most exciting opportunity to hang out with Kwesi Millington! We gathered with Kwesi and a small group of local students and parents to share laughs, stories and pizza. Kwesi shared some wisdom around resilience, how to bolster mental health, and the value and benefits of cultivating community.

Laughter. Shared humanity. Pizza. Enough said.

We are so, so grateful for these shared moments and memories...here's to many more

His name is Kwesi Millington and he will be sharing about diversity and inclusion, becoming aware of the biases we have and building resilience and self confidence. Students follow people more than rules. Relationships matter.

Agree, or no? I am more connected to the "6 degrees of separation" concept (Stanley Milgard, 1967); that we are all inherently connected (even if we don't know it), and are, therefore, all impacted by what happens in our world. What do you think? Link in comments to the theory if you're interested :- )

This presentation is being done virtually on February 28th at R.I. Baker school. It'll be engaging, thoughtful, and a great opportunity for discussion and reflection!
However....

.. it does not demonstrate leadership or division commitment to valuing diversity when it is not paired with accountability, adequate professional training, transparency and active change.

Presentations are good, but not as good as making the actual changes that will keep our kids safe.

*EDUCATION PIECE* Did you read "The Long-Term Effects of Bullying, Victimization, and Bystander Behavior on Emotion Regulation and Its Physiological Correlates"? If time to read an article isn't available to you, here's a quick breakdown:

The article is a summation of a study that looks at the longterm effects of both victims of bullying and bystanders. It's results conclude that YES, people who were bullied AND people who witnessed bullying both demonstrated challenges with emotional regulation as adults, as a result of these experiences. This study is a furthering to the work of Wilke et al. (2013).

Let's discuss: From your perspective, is the fact that (some) consequences of bullying don't show up until later in life, or the high frequency of bullying in our schools the reason that so many students and parents are faced with minimal action/ inaction when bullying is reported?
