It's been a little while since the last FireSmart update, and the past couple of weeks have been incredibly difficult for so many people.

Thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by the wildfire. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the BC Wildfire Service, structural protection crews, firefighters, emergency personnel, volunteers, and everyone working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and communities.

While the current focus is on staying safe and supporting one another, this is also a reminder of why FireSmart matters. Taking steps to reduce wildfire risk around homes and properties helps create more resilient communities and gives firefighters a better chance to defend them when wildfire threatens.

When it's safe to return home, consider taking a few simple FireSmart actions:
🌲 Remove dead vegetation and debris from around your home.
🌲 Keep grass cut short and well-watered when possible.
🌲 Clean leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters.
🌲 Store firewood and other combustible materials at least 10 metres away from structures whenever possible.

Wildfire seasons remind us how important it is to prepare before an emergency happens. Stay informed, follow evacuation orders and alerts, and continue to support one another.

Stay safe, everyone. ❤️

🏡 **Is Your Home Ready for Wildfire Season?**

One of the easiest and most important steps you can take to protect your home is to complete a **FireSmart Home Assessment**.

A home assessment helps identify simple improvements that can reduce your home's risk from wildfire. Small changes—like clearing debris from gutters, moving firewood away from your home, trimming trees and shrubs, and maintaining the first 1.5 metres around your home with non-combustible materials—can make a big difference.

The best part? Many of these improvements are low-cost and can be completed over a weekend, and you could be eligible for a Rebate.

If you're unsure where to start, we're here to help! Schedule a **FREE FireSmart Home Assessment** and receive personalized recommendations for your property. There is no obligation—just practical advice to help you better protect your home, your family, and our community.

Once you’re FireSmart, you can’t unsee the risks.

Messy gutters, combustible materials stored next to the house, and flammable vegetation all put your house at risk during wildfire season.

Luckily, you can FireSmart your property in a few simple steps:

🍁 Clear leaves and debris from your gutters
🧯 Store flammable materials at least 10 metres from your home
🪴 Swap combustible plants for fire-resistant vegetation.

🌸 June's Plant of the Month is Rosy Pussytoes (Antennaria rosea), and it might be the hardest-working little plant in a FireSmart garden.

This charming, low-growing perennial forms a dense silvery-green mat that lasts year-round, making it an excellent groundcover and a great alternative to bark mulch in your intermediate zone. Come late spring and early summer, it puts on a show of soft pink blooms that pollinators love. Deer, put off by its fuzzy leaves, tend to leave it alone.

A few reasons to love it:
🌿 Fire-resistant and extremely cold hardy
☀️ Thrives in sunny, dry conditions, perfect for a xeriscape garden
🐝 Supports bees and butterflies
🏡 Spreads to form living mulch, reducing wildfire risk around your home

Leaves stay low at around 5 cm, with flowers reaching up to 40 cm in height. It's a small plant that does a big job.

Your home doesn’t need to be in the forest to be at risk.

Wildfire embers can travel kilometres ahead of a fire and ignite dry leaves, mulch, fences, decks or roofs long before a flame front arrives. That means homes in neighbourhoods, grasslands and communities outside heavily forested areas can still be vulnerable during wildfire season.

Small FireSmart steps around your property can make a big difference:

🧹 Clean leaves and needles from gutters and roofs
🪵 Move firewood and combustible materials away from structures
🌱 Trim dead vegetation and keep grass short
🪨 Consider non-combustible landscaping materials near your home

Preparing your property before wildfire season helps reduce risk for you, your family and your community.
