Reggio Emilia–Inspired Play 🌿🪵

It’s amazing how simple pieces of wood can spark so many possibilities for children’s imagination and play.

Earlier this week, I added some pieces of wood to our backyard. Since then, the children have used them to build a house, a bridge, a sleigh, a tall tree, and even a campfire.

After building the campfire, their play naturally expanded into pretending to go camping and roasting marshmallows. Every day, they return to the activity with so much joy, curiosity, and interest.

What I love most is watching how they work together—sharing ideas, solving problems, helping one another, and building on each other’s imagination.

This is what I love about Reggio Emilia–inspired play: offering open-ended materials and allowing children to decide what they can become. A simple piece of wood can be a bridge today, a campfire tomorrow, and something completely different the next day. 🌱✨

Sometimes, the simplest materials create the richest play.

Activity: Slides, Splashes, swims & bubbles play!

The weather has been getting hotter, so we had the perfect way to cool down—our portable swimming pool with slides! ☀️💦 The children were full of smiles and laughter as they took turns sliding and splashing into the water. They had so much fun that they didn't want to stop until they were chilly and ready to dry off.

Learning through play:

💦Built gross motor skills through climbing, sliding, and splashing.
👦🏼Practised taking turns and playing cooperatively with friends.
🏃🏼‍♂️Developed balance and coordination during active play.
🧍🏽‍♀️Built confidence while trying new activities.

Activity: 🚲 Bicycle Obstacle Course! 🚲

Ready, set, go! The children were all geared up and excited for our bicycle obstacle course. They had so much fun riding their bikes and following the course.

Sometimes they bumped into the orange cones, but that didn't stop them! They laughed, kept trying, and had a blast from start to finish.

Learning through play:
🚲 Practiced balance, coordination, and bike-riding skills.
🟠 Followed directions and learned to ride around obstacles.
💪 Built confidence by trying again after making mistakes.
😊 Encouraged active play while having fun with friends.

🚂 Choo Choo Train! 🚂

One of the best things about having our dayhome close to the train tracks is that we can watch the trains pass by anytime—no travelling needed!

All we have to do is grab a chair, cover our ears from the loud whistle, and enjoy the show. The children get so excited every time a train goes by.

Maybe next time we'll bring some popcorn to make it an even better train show! 🍿😆

Activity: Crazy Hair Day! 🎉

The children couldn't wait to make their hair as crazy as possible! We looked at some fun hairstyle ideas online, and they chose simple but cute styles with lots of ponytails.

There were big smiles all around as they looked at their crazy hairstyles in the mirror. They were so excited to show off their fun new looks and enjoyed being creative together! 💕

🍓🍌 Strawberry Banana Smoothie Day! 🍌🍓

A healthy and refreshing snack for the warm weather! Our children had so much fun making strawberry banana smoothies together. They took turns adding the strawberries, bananas, and milk, and were so excited to help.

They were very proud of what they made, and the biggest smiles came when they enjoyed their smoothies and said, "We helped make it ! “

This activity may look simple, but there is so much learning happening! The children are learning through play by:

Activity: Ball Pit & Color Sorting Play

The children had so much fun exploring the ball pit ! They enjoyed sorting the balls by choosing their favourite colours first and then their least favourite colours. It was wonderful to hear them talk about why they liked certain colours more than others. This simple activity encouraged colour recognition, decision-making, and communication while also helping to develop their sorting and fine motor skills. Most importantly, the children were engaged, excited, and enjoyed learning through play together.
