Species: American Crow
Date: November 25, 2025
Location: Atlantic Veterinary College - West Facade
A community member found an American Crow that appeared stunned from a window collision and had a crusty lesion over its left eye.
The lesion looked consistent with avian pox, which may have reduced the bird’s vision and contributed to the collision.
We tried to capture the bird to bring it to a rehabilitation centre, but after about 20 minutes it recovered enough to fly off on its own. During this time, several other crows were seen bringing it food and guarding it, showing strong social behaviour.

Species: Rock Pigeon
Date: November 11, 2025
Location: Andrew Hall
A community member found a deceased Rock Pigeon near Andrew Hall. This building hasn’t been identified as high-risk due to its relatively small window surface area, and the carcass appeared older and scavenged.

🐥 Species: Yellow Warbler
📅 Date: September 10, 2025
📍 Location: Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre (DRC)
Another Yellow Warbler was found dead in front of the DRC’s large glass facade. Because the facade reflects the surroundings so clearly, a community member previously reported witnessing about 15-20 bird-window collisions at this location annually.

🟡 Species: Yellow Warbler
📅 Date: September 2, 2025
📍 Location: Bell Aliant Centre (north facade)
A Yellow Warbler, which migrates from Atlantic Canada to Central and South America to overwinter, was found dead at the Bell Aliant Centre’s large window facade. Another bird was found at the same spot earlier this summer.
Fall migration is peak season for window collisions, especially for first-year birds on their first journey south. Making windows bird-friendly can reduce collisions.

🐥 Species: Belted Kingfisher
📅 Date: August 20, 2025
📍 Location: Atlantic Veterinary College (300 level of the North Annex)
Community members have witnessed a belted kingfisher flying into a window. The bird was injured and was taken to the local wildlife rehabilitation centre.

🐥 Species: European Starling (juvenile)
📅 Date: July 29, 2025
📍 Location: Bell Aliant Centre (north-facing facade)
A deceased European Starling was found within a meter of the Bell Aliant Centre’s north-facing facade.
The glass reflects nearby trees and the sky, making it one of the high-risk buildings on campus.
The bird has been sent for necropsy, and we are waiting to confirm whether the cause of death was a window collision.

🐥 Species: European Starling (juvenile)
📅 Date: June 6, 2025
📍 Location: Dalton Hall (third floor)
A community member reported a bird-window collision they witnessed earlier this summer.
The starling flew into a window, perched for a while to recover, and eventually flew back into the trees.
This report is especially valuable, as Dalton Hall isn’t on our list of high-risk buildings due to its older architecture and standard sized windows - meaning it’s not part of our daily patrol.
It highlights how important community reports are and reminds us that bird-window collisions can happen anywhere, even with smaller windows!

Meet the team behind Bird Safe UPEI! 🪶
We’re a student-led research project at AVC, working to understand bird-window collisions on the UPEI campus.
With support from faculty members Dr. Cusack and Dr. Raab, our project combines daily patrols, community reports, and outreach to build a baseline understanding of the issue.
Follow along for updates, and don’t hesitate to message us if you spot a collision or have questions!

We need your help!
Citizen science is an integral part of our project.
Your reports help us identify and collect data on bird-window collisions that might otherwise go unnoticed, or occur outside our regular patrol routes.
Please help by reporting any bird-window collisions you witness on campus. These may include:
🪟 Imprints on windows
🤕 Injured birds
🪦 Dead birds
DM us with the location (building or GPS), date/time, and a photo if possible!
