Why is a beautiful contraption as pictured here illegal in PEI?

Because It would drain but it wouldn’t trap and seal like a p trap would.

Since you’re probably wondering, now what’s wrong with that? Who needs a seal? Why?

Is it okay that sewer gas fill your air until the igniter on your furnace gets a hold of the methane?

The correct slope for a fixture drain is:

- One pipe diameter or less from the trap outlet to the vent fitting inlet.

This ensures:

- Proper drainage, the water doesn’t run faster than the solids
- Prevention of clogs
- No water siphoning out of the trap
- No sewer gas entering the living space

On the other hand, an incorrect slope greater than one pipe diameter can lead to:

- Water siphoning out of the trap
- Sewer gas entering the living space
- Drainage problems
- Clogs

How Grateful Are We To Live Today and not Back Then?
Instead of toilet paper, Ancient Romans used a sponge on the end of a long stick that was shared by everyone in the community. This device was called a Tersorium

When not in use, the stick stayed in a bucket of heavily salted seawater in the communal bathroom.
