Some relationships don’t need much explaining. They grow in the noticing, the responding, the playing, and the simply being together. 💙

Watching these two learn about each other, connect with each other, and love each other has been one of the sweetest parts of becoming a grandma.

My son.
My grandson.
My heart. ❤️

Following up on my previous post…

Recess should be a right, not a privilege that has to be earned.

We can hold students accountable AND respond with curiosity, compassion, connection, and co-regulation.

Read through the slides for some practical, brain-based alternatives that support kids in the moment.

Address the behavior. Repair when needed. Teach for next time. But don’t take away one of the very things that may help a student regulate, reset, and return to class ready to engage and learn.

Be a Defender of Play.
Be a Defender of Recess. 🩷

It truly is scary.

Kids are still losing recess as a consequence for behavior, unfinished work, or missing assignments.

Recess isn’t a reward for kids who have earned it. Recess provides movement, play, social connection, sensory input, and a much needed break from the cognitive demands of the school day.

And often, the kids who are struggling the most are the ones who need recess the most.

Recess should be a right, not a privilege. 💯

Movement matters.
Regulation matters.
Play matters.

Yes, academics matter too.

But in the push for academic excellence, let’s not forget to support the WHOLE child.

Drop a 💯 in the comments if you agree.

Vancouver. I am coming for you. 🙌

I am so genuinely excited about October 28th and 29th in Burnaby – and I've been meaning to say that out loud for a while now.

Autism Strategies and Neurodiversity Affirming Practices is filled with practical strategies for both new grads and seasoned clinicians. We're going to spend real time together unpacking what it actually looks like to lead with strengths, to move away from compliance-based practice, and to ask not what's wrong with this child but what's possible for this child. That shift changes everything – how you assess, how you plan, how you show up in the room with kids and families.

As both a parent to an autistic son and an SLP, I share evidence-based strategies informed by both lived experience and clinical practice. My son has always been my greatest teacher. 💙

And this professional development isn't just for SLPs. I mean that. The OTs, PTs, educators, social workers, psychologists, and administrators in the room are just as important as the speech-language pathologists. Autistic kids don't live in silos and they shouldn't be supported in silos either. When the whole team is in the room together, something different happens. Come with your people.

One thing I want you to know: every ticket includes a Night 1 meet & greet, and I don't take that lightly. That time with you – not on a stage, just in a room together – is honestly one of my favorite parts of any event. I'll be there, fully present, and I want to meet you.

Here's my honest heads up: the last SoundLand event sold out, and we're less than 12 weeks away. I'm not saying that to pressure you – I'm saying it because I've watched people miss events they really wanted to attend and I don't want that to be you. If you've been sitting on this, now is the time.

📣 Every child gets exactly one childhood.

Affirming supports, services, and accommodations matter.

But their purpose should always be to improve a child’s quality of life—not replace childhood itself.

Therapy should help children participate more fully in life, not interfere with the experiences that make childhood joyful.

Let’s make sure we’re building lives worth living—not just teaching autistic children to look less autistic.

What do M&Ms have to do with caregiver coaching?

Imagine a toddler is awake about 84 hours each week.

Now imagine...

🤍 83 white M&Ms represent the hours they spend with their caregivers.

❤️ 1 red M&M represents the one hour they spend with an Early Intervention provider.

When you look at it that way, the message becomes pretty clear.

The greatest opportunity for learning doesn't happen during our one-hour visit.

It happens during the other 83 hours—during meals, bath time, getting dressed, reading books, grocery shopping, and all the ordinary moments that make up a child's day.

That's why caregiver coaching matters.

Our role isn't just to support children during our visits. It's to empower caregivers to recognize and create meaningful learning opportunities throughout everyday routines and interactions.

Learning for the caregiver happens during the Early Intervention session.

Learning for the child happens between sessions.
