An employee takes a knock, says they feel fine, and goes back to work. Hours later, symptoms set in — headache, confusion, light sensitivity, nausea. By then, they've been pushing through an injury that needed rest.

Signs to watch for after a head impact:
Headache or pressure in the skull
Confusion or slowed thinking
Balance problems
Sensitivity to light or noise
Memory gaps around the event

If any of these appear, the person should stop work, be monitored, and be cleared by a medical professional before returning.

Watching someone have a seizure is frightening. Not knowing what to do makes it worse.

Most people's instinct is to restrain the person or put something in their mouth. Both are wrong — and both can cause harm.

Here is what actually helps:
Clear the area around them. Protect their head with something soft. Time the seizure. Turn them onto their side once the shaking stops. Stay with them and call 9-1-1 if it lasts more than 5 minutes, if they don't regain consciousness, or if it's their first seizure.

That's it. Stay calm, keep them safe, and get help.

Anaphylaxis can kill in minutes. It can also be stopped in minutes — if someone nearby knows what to do.

Signs include facial and lip swelling, a sensation of the throat closing, difficulty breathing, rash, vomiting, dizziness, and changes in level of consciousness. (American Heart Association)

If a coworker carries an epinephrine auto-injector, a trained first aider should be ready to help them self-administer it at the first sign of a reaction. (American Heart Association )

Then call 9-1-1 immediately. The medication buys time — it does not replace emergency care.

A diabetic emergency can look a lot like intoxication: confusion, shaking, slurred speech, sudden aggression. It's easy to misread, and that delay costs time you don't have.

Two things to know:
Low blood sugar acts fast. The person may be sweating, disoriented, or unable to speak clearly. If they're conscious, give them something sweet and call for help.
High blood sugar builds slower but can still become critical. Watch for extreme thirst, confusion, and rapid breathing.

In either case, if you're unsure — call 9-1-1. That's always the right call.

Hey everyone!
Ready 4 Everything (ready4everything.ca) is looking to find first aid instructors who are looking for casual work in the Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton area!
Ideally, we would like to give this opportunity to someone in post-secondary or someone looking to get into the healthcare field and is interested in getting some related experience and resume booster.

For the right candidate, I am also willing to pay for their training to become a first aid instructor. (obviously the start time would be later than April in that case)
Pay: $22-25/hour based on experience + travel expenses

Must have:
-Valid class 5 license
-Clean vulnerable sector check
-At least 2 good references
-Own source of transportation

Good to have:
-Red Cross or Heart and Stroke foundation first aid instructing certification
-Passion for teaching
