In the spring of 2015, the NB Education Minister announced "trigger schools" to be considered for closure. Schools with less than 100 students and/or those with less than 30% capacity were identified. Back Bay Elementary School (BBES) has been one of the schools chosen to go through this process in the fall of 2015. BBES has consistently operated at far more than 30% capacity, however the student enrolment, although consistent with a projected increase, is less than 100. Recent significant capital upgrades including an elevator, wheel chair access and various infrastructure upgrades have been completed. The school is well built and well maintained and has many good years of life and learning ahead. Get in touch and get involved to support your community's future. [email protected]

Great news to share!

Earlier today we were notified by the Superintendent that after careful review of the points raised by our school including the enrolment numbers at both Back Bay and St. George, the District Education Council has made a request to the Minister to exempt Back Bay Elementary from a sustainability review for the 2015-2016 school year.

This means Back Bay will not be reviewed this year for closure.

While this does not guarantee a review will not be conducted in future years it is a very positive sign that the DEC has made the right decision at this time to exempt our school. A letter was sent to parents today.

Thank you all for your support and please continue to like and share this page as further updates will be provided. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders moving forward to improve policy 409.

Tonight BBES PSSC Chair Shane Borthwick attended and addressed the first meeting of the District Education Council this school year.

With nearly $300,000 spent on Back Bay Elementary in recent upgrades and nothing further required, an enrolment increase of 12% this year, capacity of 65% and projected increases with growth from local sectors and major announcements in Saint John ... BBES is "JUST NOT READY" for closure.

Listen for an interview Shane did with CHSJ News following the DEC meeting tonight.

Stay tuned for upcoming public meetings expected this fall.

Show your support for our school, our community, our children's education by attending the meetings and bringing along friends and family.
