Glengarry Broadsword Academy hosted the Glengarry Youth Chess Tournament this past Sunday afternoon (May 31st) at the Sunshine On Main (16 Main Street North, Alexandria) from 2pm to 5pm. The two competition divisions were age 8 to 12, and age 13 to 17. The event was well attended and a great success, in no small part due to the remarkable level of talent shown by our local young players.
The winner of the Age 8-12 division was Wesley Ferguson, who walked away with the $45.00 cash prize. Second, third and fourth places went to Jake Pinsonneault, Max Di Giacomo and Axel Boekhoff, respectively. Wesley and his sister, Autumn Ferguson, are regular competitors in Ottawa chess tournaments (and it showed)!
First place for the Age 13-17 division went to Pearson Fraser. Second, third and fourth place were William Glover, Elijah Di Giacomo and Samuel Fast, respectively.
The owners of Sunshine on Main (16 Main Street North, Alexandria), Diane and Jonathan, who so generously offered their wonderful restaurant as a venue for the tournament, also kept the kitchen open during the event and then donated all proceeds from food sales to the fundraiser, in addition to providing delicious cookies as party favors to all of the participating children and youth competitors. A Sunshine on Main patron also made a donation.
The level of chess play was quite high for both age divisions, as was the exceptional conduct by all the players. Alexandria evidently has a rich community of chess players with a fair to strong knowledge of the game. Many parents were in attendance, supporting their children through the three hours of almost continuous play, and most of whom had taught their children the game. The skill and comportment of the players was a tribute to the coaching provided by their parents.
This tournament was organized as a fundraiser by the Glengarry Broadsword Academy, a local historical fencing club (HEMA) with a developing sport fencing program. With the donation of $106.00 from Sunshine and Main, the tournament raised $320.10 after costs, all of which is going towards supporting children and youth fencing in Alexandria.
Glengarry Broadsword Academy would like to thank Sunshine on Main owners Diane and Jonathan for being such wonderful hosts, and thank all the players and their parents for participating and making it such a successful and fun day. L'Académie Glengarry Broadsword a organisé le tournoi d'échecs pour les jeunes de Glengarry dimanche dernier après-midi (31 mai) au Sunshine On Main (16, rue Main Nord, Alexandria), de 14 h à 17 h. Les deux catégories de compétition étaient les 8-12 ans et les 13-17 ans. L'événement a attiré de nombreux participants et a remporté un franc succès, en grande partie grâce au talent remarquable dont ont fait preuve nos jeunes joueurs locaux.
Le vainqueur de la catégorie des 8-12 ans est Wesley Ferguson, qui a remporté le prix en espèces de 45,00 $. Les deuxième, troisième et quatrième places sont revenues respectivement à Jake Pinsonneault, Max Di Giacomo et Axel Boekhoff. Wesley et sa sœur, Autumn Ferguson, participent régulièrement aux tournois d’échecs d’Ottawa (et cela s’est vu) !

Les propriétaires de Sunshine on Main (16, rue Main Nord, Alexandria), Diane et Jonathan, qui ont si généreusement mis leur merveilleux restaurant à disposition pour accueillir le tournoi, ont également maintenu la cuisine ouverte pendant l’événement et ont ensuite reversé l’intégralité des recettes de la vente de nourriture à la collecte de fonds, en plus d’offrir de délicieux biscuits en guise de cadeaux à tous les enfants et jeunes participants. Un client de Sunshine on Main a également fait un don.
Le niveau de jeu était très élevé dans les deux catégories d’âge, tout comme le comportement exemplaire de tous les joueurs. Alexandria dispose manifestement d’une riche communauté de joueurs d’échecs possédant des connaissances du jeu allant de correctes à solides. De nombreux parents étaient présents pour soutenir leurs enfants tout au long des trois heures de jeu quasi ininterrompu, et la plupart d’entre eux avaient eux-mêmes enseigné le jeu à leurs enfants. Les compétences et le comportement des joueurs rendaient hommage à l’encadrement fourni par leurs parents.
Ce tournoi a été organisé dans le cadre d’une collecte de fonds par la Glengarry Broadsword Academy, un club local d’escrime historique (HEMA) qui développe actuellement un programme d’escrime sportive. Grâce au don de 106,00 $ de Sunshine on Main, le tournoi a permis de récolter 320,10 $ après déduction des frais, somme qui sera intégralement reversée au soutien de l’escrime pour les enfants et les jeunes à Alexandria.
