Today is World Autism Awareness Day. A day to celebrate and embrace the diversity each individual with autism brings to the world.
We feel incredibly lucky to spend our days alongside some of the most unique, hilarious, talented, and remarkable children and their families.

If you’ve ever felt unsure about ABA, you’re not alone. There are a lot of misconceptions about what ABA actually looks like.
Here’s the truth: ABA is not about control or compliance.
Ethical, modern ABA is grounded in trust, play, and positive reinforcement. It’s designed to teach children skills that will carry over to their natural environment (home, school, community). ABA meets children where they are, and helps them build skills, while respecting their individuality.

In ABA, we know that specific, descriptive praise is far more effective than generic praise. When children understand exactly which behaviour is being reinforced, that behaviour is more likely to happen again and generalize across environments.
“Good job” feels supportive, but it doesn’t necessarily teach. Descriptive praise builds clarity, confidence, and real skill growth.
Small language shifts can create big change.

Your child’s progress can sometimes be easy to miss - not because it isn’t happening, but because it rarely starts with the big, dramatic changes parents might be expecting.
Oftentimes, early ABA progress looks like tiny shifts:
- a smoother transition in one part of the day
- an extra few seconds of regulation
- trying one step of a routine they used to refuse
- needing one less prompt
- recovering faster after getting upset
These small wins are actually the foundation of the bigger, long-term skills you’re working toward. They build on each other until one day, the progress becomes impossible to miss.
So if you’re seeing even small changes, ABA is moving in the right direction. And if you’re ever unsure, reach out to your BCBA/RBA. High-quality ABA is data-driven, and your team is collecting detailed information every single session. Often, the data shows patterns of growth long before it’s obvious day to day.
