KGAFELA MOKOKA DID NOT PROVIDE AN ANSWER ON THE PENDING TEACHERS’ TUITION FEES REFUND

GABORONE: Parliament was told on Wednesday that the Minister of Child Welfare and Education, Nono Kgafela Mokoka, has requested to answer a question regarding the pending refund to teachers who sponsored themselves for further education and training at a later date.

“Honourable Minister requested a later date,” said Victor Phologolo, Member of Parliament for Kanye West, standing in for the mover of the question, Prince Mosanana of Kanye East.

Mosanana had asked Minister Kgafela Mokoka if she was aware that “a number of teachers who sponsored themselves for further education training have not been refunded their tuition fees.”

TEACHERS HAVE NOT BEEN REFUNDED THEIR TUITION FEES

GABORONE: On Wednesday afternoon, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kanye East, Prince Mosanana, will ask the Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, if she is aware that “a number of teachers who sponsored themselves for further education training have not been refunded their tuition fees.”

Mosanana will further ask the Mokoka to state, if so, the total number of teachers who have been affected; the total amount outstanding; when the refunds will be made; and steps that are being taken to upgrade these teachers to salary scales commensurate with their qualifications and length of service.

SPONSORSHIP FOR THE 2026/2027 CYCLE IS OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS

The Minister of Higher Education, Prince Maele, on Monday officially opened the 2026/2027 sponsorship cycle, offering 12,250 places, with 7,906 for higher achievers who accumulated 36+ points or equivalent.

Of the 12,250 places available, 1,200 are reserved for the marginalised or special-needs group with 31+ points, 3,000 are reserved for applicants who upgrade their results, and 144 entrants are under the top achievers’ sponsorship programme.

In February, the Minister of Finance, Ndaba Gaolathe, allocated P4,267,347,080 to the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF), which is 57.0% of the Ministry’s total recurrent budget.

BSE REVEALED THE TOP FOUR SCHOOLS

The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) on Tuesday revealed the top four senior secondary schools that took part in the Finance and Investment Competition 2026 at the regional level. The four-week regional competition ended on Friday, with 170 students from 34 schools participating.

Lobatse Senior Secondary School emerged victorious in the South Region, Al-Nur School in the East Region, Swaneng Hill School in the North Region and Ghanzi Senior Secondary School in the West Region, respectively. The schools have proceeded to the national level competition, for which BSE said the date will be announced soon.
