South East Region kickstarts the 2026 regional competitions. Congratulations to the primary school spellers who emerged victorious and will represent the region at the national finals to be held in Maun. And special thanks to our host Kagiso Senior.

Spelling Bee Botswana joins the nation in mourning the passing of the Former President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae (1939–2026).

President Mogae was a visionary leader whose dedication to national development helped shape Botswana into a beacon of progress and stability. His commitment to education opened doors for countless young people and strengthened the future of our nation. Through his leadership, many learners were inspired to pursue excellence, knowledge, and service to Botswana.

As an organization that believes in the power of education and youth empowerment, we honor his immense contribution to the development of education in Botswana and the lasting impact he leaves behind.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire nation during this difficult time.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Botswana participated in the African Spelling Bee 2026 held in Harare, Zimbabwe, where the team finished fourth overall out of ten participating countries.

Although Team Botswana did not place in the top three within their respective categories, two of the country’s spellers advanced to the highly competitive Multilingual Round.

The junior speller was eliminated by the Zulu word Isicathimiya, while the senior speller exited just before the Championship Round after being unable to complete the spelling of Ichneumon within the allocated time.

In the final team standings, South Africa secured first place, followed by Nigeria in second and Zimbabwe in third, with Botswana taking fourth position ahead of the remaining participating nations. The team extends heartfelt appreciation to Mrs Tracy Mothophi of Kgaswe International School, whose dedication and critical role in preparing the learners contributed significantly to their success on the continental stage
