2025 JUNIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (JCE) RESULTS RELEASED

Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2025 Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) Results. A total of 47,880 candidates sat for the examination, representing a 2.62% increase in candidature compared to 45,261 candidates in 2024.

There were 23,270 (48.7%) male candidates and 24,542 (51.3%) female candidates sitting for the 2025 Junior Certificate Examination.

The grades available at syllabus level are on a pass scale of A - E, where Grades A to C are
credit grades and D to E are pass grades. At qualification level, the grades available are Merit, A, B, C, D, and E. Candidates failing to meet the minimum requirements for the lowest grade (E) at both syllabus and qualification levels are unclassified and assigned letter U. In contrast, candidates who did not meet the requirements of grading at component level are assigned letter X at syllabus and/or at qualification level.

Performance

In 2025, 2.10% of candidates obtained Grade A or better compared to 1.50% in 2024, showing an improvement of 0.60%. Candidates obtaining Grade B or better increased by 1.10% from 12.80% in 2024 to 13.90% in 2025. The performance improved by 1.10% at Grade C or better from 38.50% to 39.60%. On the other hand, the performance declined by 2.10% at Grade D or better and by 1.80% at Grade E or better, respectively. Worth noting is that 16% (7239) of candidates, compared to 14.40% (6132) of the previous year did not meet the minimum requirements for the award of Grade E and were assigned the letter U.
Outstanding Performance

The attainment of a Merit is classified as outstanding performance. The requirement for a Merit is to obtain at least 7 Grade As at syllabus level following the prescribed criteria. In this series, the number of candidates with outstanding performance increased significantly. A total of 43 candidates from 39 different Centres across the Educational Regions qualify for the award of a Merit compared to 16 candidates from 8 different Centres in the previous year. Of the 43 candidates qualifying for the award of a Merit, seven (7) candidates obtained Grade A in all their 9 syllabuses compared to 2 in the previous year.

In light of the reported proportions, it is plausible to conclude that overall performance by the 2025 JCE cohort has shown some improvement over the 2024 cohort.

The pass rate for the 2025 cohort is 83.70%.

The female candidates outperformed their male counterparts.

Performance at individual grades is as follows:

Merit
43 (forty-three) candidates (0.10%) compared to16 (sixteen) in 2024

Grade A
898 candidates (2.00%) compared to the 617 (1.50%) candidates in 2024

Grade B
5,336 candidates (11.80%) compared to 4,800 (11.30%) in 2024

Grade C
11,568 candidates (25.60%) compared to 10,912 (25.70%) in 2024

Grade D
14,001 candidates (31%) compared to 14,524 (34,20%) in 2024

Grade E
5,888 candidates (13.10%) compared to 5,420 (12.80%) in the previous year

Ungraded
7,239 (16%) candidates compared to 6,132 (14.40%) in 2024.

It should be noted that results for candidates who did not meet the requirement for grading have been denoted with the letter X. This is usually temporary and will be resolved within the enquiries about results period.

It is important to emphasise that these results are provisional for a period of six (6) weeks commencing today 29h January, 2026 until 12th March, 2026. Therefore, all enquiries about results for school candidates should be directed to the schools/centres, and private candidates should forward their enquiries to the BEC offices within the above stipulated period.

Distribution of results will be done as follows:

Distribution to Centres: Centres will be given access to the Malepa system.

Distribution to Regional Offices: Regional Offices will access the results through the Malepa system.

Individual Candidates: Candidates will be able to access the results through the BEC Website as well as SMS. The How to Access results guidelines are available on the BEC page, Botswana Examinations Council, BEC Website www.bec.co.bw, and X Account
