Chinese Cultural Tour in Gaborone 2018

On May 14th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana successfully launched the “Chinese Culture Show” in 2018. The show is planned to last half a month and to be held in 7 primary and secondary schools in Gaborone, Francistown and Maun.

From May 14th to 16th, the show was held at three elementary and junior high schools in Gaborone or around the city. These schools were Kelemogile Junior Secondary School, Pillip Moshotle Primary School, and Mmanoko Primary School. Of the 14 staff members of CIUB (Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana) there were the local director Part Mgadla and the Chinese director Pu Durong.

At the beginning of the event, the audience all stood up and sang the national anthems of Botswana and China. Afterwards, the local director Part Mgadla made a speech, in which he expressed his love of Chinese language and culture from his own experience in learning Chinese. He mentioned the influence of China today in Africa and the world over. He also encouraged Botswana children to get prepared to learn Chinese. Then the Chinese director Pu Durong presented some gifts to the host school, including a Collected Edition book CHINA, footballs, cultural T-shirts on behalf of the Confucius Institute at UB.

After the welcoming ceremony, the instructors of the Confucius Institute presented several interesting Chinese traditional performances: Laundry Dance, Tai Ji, Dance of a Wild goose, Huangmei Opera, a Botswana Song, chorus, Costume Fashion Show, and so on.

After the performance, students were free to choose one from the following cultural experience classes: a Chinese song, Chinese traditional dance, Chinese Calligraphy, paper cutting, martial arts, a Chinese movie, and an open Chinese class. These classes helped local students to have some idea of what the traditional Chinese culture is.

From May 20th, the Confucius Institute will go northward all the way to four schools in Francistown and Maun, continue the Chinese cultural promotion activities and continue telling Chinese stories and setting up a favorable image of China.
