It is with great sadness and pain to announce the passing of the Founder and Director of Phoenix Academy,Dr E. P. Motswapong-Namogang.She transitioned from a battle with asthma this Monday 6th May 2024.
Dr. Elizabeth Pulane Motswapong-Namogang, born on March 28th, 1973, was a beacon of intellectual curiosity and a devoted member of her academic community. She was the second child of Mr. Kono Gaomodimo and Mrs. Dikeledi Motswapong of Radisele village, where her journey of academic excellence began.
Lizzy's educational odyssey commenced at Radisele Primary School and continued at Madiba Senior Secondary School, laying the foundation for her future pursuits. She pursued her passion for knowledge at the University of Botswana, earning a BA in Theology and English with second class, first division in 1996, followed by a PGDE with merit in 1997.
Joining the University of Botswana as an SDF (Staff Development Fellow) in 1998, Lizzy embarked on a path of academic exploration that spanned continents. She pursued her Master of Arts in Oriental and African Religions at SOAS, University of London, delving into a comparative study between Setswana Bogwera and Hindu Upanayana Initiation rites, under the mentorship of Dr. Julia Leslie (MHSRIP). She graduated in 2000.
In the pursuit of her Ph.D. from 2004 to 2007, Dr. Motswapong delved deep into the intersection of Hinduism and Gender, under the esteemed guidance of Guruji, Prof. Burkhard Scherer. Her scholarly output extended beyond research, encompassing the mentorship of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as the examination of dissertations from universities worldwide.
Dr. Motswapong distinguished herself as a Senior Lecturer in Indo Religions, specialising in Hindu Studies, at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Botswana. Her dedication to academia and her students was unparalleled, as she introduced countless learners to the rich tapestry of Indian Religions with a particular focus on Hindu Studies.
Beyond academia, Lizzy epitomized love and compassion, radiating humility and a fervent desire to uplift her community. She embarked on a journey of marriage with Mr. Thobosi Namogang in November 2022, and their union was blessed with the joy of one beautiful daughter, Tema.
She leaves behind her daughter Tema, her husband, brother, sister, and mother-in-law. Dr. Elizabeth Pulane Motswapong's legacy of intellectual rigor, kindness, and service lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
