Francistown schools have recorded a dramatic reduction in their monthly electricity bills following the installation of solar power systems, with bills falling from an average of P10,000 to about P300 per month. The development was revealed by Francistown Mayor, His Worship Honourable Gaone Majere, during a Full Council session.
Majere said solar installations had been completed at nine primary schools as part of the Council’s Green Energy Transition Programme, with the schools commissioned by Botswana Power Corporation. “On average prior to installation of solar power, Council paid BPC an average of P10,000.00 per month and currently the commissioned schools pay an average of P300.00,” he said. Monarch Primary School is yet to be commissioned, while solar installation is currently underway at the Fire Station and Centre for the Deaf.
The Mayor said the project was already showing significant savings for Council and aligned with Government’s commitment to transitioning from conventional energy sources to renewable energy. The reduction from P10,000 to P300 represents a monthly saving of about P9,700 per commissioned school, highlighting the potential financial impact of expanding solar power across more public facilities.
