DID YOU KNOW TODAY IS World Press Freedom Day?
A brief history:
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. This annual observance takes place on May 3, which marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration
The Windhoek Declaration:
In 1991, African newspaper journalists gathered in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, to discuss and create a statement of free press principles.
The resulting Windhoek Declaration emphasized the importance of press freedom and the role of independent media in democratic societies.
It called for governments to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression, as enshrined in Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
World Press Freedom Day:
Date: May 3
Purpose:
Celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom.
Evaluates press freedom around the world.
Defends the media from attacks on their independence.
Pays tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
