Communication is, at its core, a relationship building and relationship management process.

When you communicate with people consistently and meaningfully, you send a powerful message that you value and respect them. Over time, this fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and creates a positive perception of you and your organisation.

Keeping communication channels open is essential for maintaining healthy and lasting relationships. Regular engagement helps address concerns early, prevents misunderstandings, and minimises situations that could otherwise lead to friction, mistrust, or conflict.

Therefore, effective communication is not just about sharing information, it is also about nurturing relationships that stand the test of time.

One of the greatest communication lessons is learning to take responsibility before assigning blame.

Too often, we are quick to fault others for our mistakes or for outcomes that do not go our way. Yet, as the great Elizabethan playwright William Shakespeare wisely observed:

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in the stars, but in ourselves."

My unsolicited advice to anyone reading this therefore, is that before pointing fingers at another person, take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself whether there was something you did or perhaps something you failed to do, that may have contributed to the situation.

Self-reflection therefore, is a mark of maturity, accountability, and effective leadership. It helps us learn, grow, and build stronger relationships.

Therefore, dear friends and colleagues, slow down. Pause before placing blame. More often than not, the first place to look should be within ourselves and not elsewhere.

One of the greatest dangers of information hoarding is that it creates a disconnect between management and staff, as well as among team members. When critical information is not shared, those who need it are left to make decisions without the benefit of the full picture. As a result, decision-making becomes poorly informed, leading to lower-quality outcomes and reduced organisational effectiveness.

Information hoarding also poses a significant risk to institutional continuity. When an employee possesses critical organisational knowledge but fails to share or document it, that knowledge is lost if they leave the organisation, retire, or pass away. In such circumstances, the organisation effectively loses valuable institutional memory, making it difficult to sustain operations, maintain continuity, and build on past experience.

This is a very common practice in many organisations and even social settings. Normally people do so because they feel powerful and important when it is only them who have some information that others do not have. It is an internal communication malpractice that should be disncouraged at all costs.

Organisations that do not prioritise quality customer service often fail to establish effective communication channels through which dissatisfied customers can raise their concerns and seek resolution.

Even where an appeals or complaints mechanism exists, it is sometimes merely symbolic, difficult to access, bureaucratic, or not user-friendly at all. Consequently, issues that could easily be resolved remain unattended because customers are unable to reach the right people or navigate cumbersome organisational processes.

Unfortunately, this challenge cuts across both the public and private sectors. Unfortunately for all organisations, when customers feel ignored or denied a fair opportunity to be heard, many eventually turn to social media to express their frustrations publicly. What could have been resolved through a simple internal process then becomes a reputational issue in the public domain.

Good customer service therefore, is more than a courtesy, it is an essential communication strategy. Listening, responding promptly and resolving concerns not only build trust but also protects an organisation's reputation.

As i pat on the back all those who always ensure that they display the best customer service ever, let me further motivate them through the words of that renowned American poet and civil rights leader, Maya Angelou, who famously remarked as follows:

"I have learnt that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Serving people well is always the right thing to do. It makes people feel good, appreciated and respected.
