Tashichho Dzong, meaning “Fortress of the Glorious Religion,” is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks and a living symbol of the country’s spiritual and political heritage.

The present dzong was established in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified much of Bhutan and laid the foundations of the Bhutanese state. Over the centuries, it served as an important monastic and administrative centre.

The dzong was rebuilt and expanded several times, particularly after fires and earthquakes. In the 1960s, during the reign of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, it was extensively renovated and became the principal seat of Bhutan’s government.

Today, Tashichho Dzong houses important government offices and the central monastic body, including the summer residence of the Je Khenpo. Every year, it also becomes the spectacular setting for Thimphu Tshechu, one of Bhutan’s most celebrated religious festivals.

More than a fortress, Tashichho Dzong represents the enduring Bhutanese tradition of ཆོས་དང་རྒྱལ་ཁབ — Chö-sid-nyi, the harmonious relationship between spiritual and temporal governance.

A fortress of faith. A seat of power. A living piece of Bhutanese history

Thimphu isn't just Bhutan's capital—it is the beating heart of the kingdom!

Buddha Dordenma: Where Peace Meets the Mountains
Rising majestically above the Thimphu Valley, the Buddha Dordenma is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. The enormous gilded bronze statue depicts Gautama Buddha seated in meditation, overlooking the capital from Kuenselphodrang.
Construction began in 2006 and the statue was consecrated in 2015. Standing about 51.5 metres (169 feet) tall, it is among the world’s largest seated Buddha statues. The statue houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, adding to its profound spiritual significance.
Beyond its impressive scale, Buddha Dordenma symbolizes peace, compassion, happiness and spiritual awakening—watching peacefully over Thimphu and its people.
✨ A giant Buddha. A sacred mountain. A timeless message of peace.

Thimphu isn't just Bhutan's capital—it is the beating heart of the kingdom. 🇧🇹

Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is a city unlike any other—where ancient traditions, Buddhist spirituality, and modern life exist side by side.
Nestled in a beautiful Himalayan valley, Thimphu is home to Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, Memorial Chorten, traditional markets, monasteries, and vibrant local neighbourhoods. Yet despite being Bhutan's largest urban centre, it has retained a distinctly Bhutanese character.
Here, you can watch monks walk through centuries-old courtyards in the morning, explore bustling markets in the afternoon, and watch the mountains turn golden at sunset.
Thimphu isn't just Bhutan's capital—it is the beating heart of the kingdom. 🇧🇹❤️
