Millions of cases have been detected globally since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on 31 January 2021 (WHO, 2020). Bhutan is also no exception to this. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 emergency, face masks are one of the most used precautionary measures by the public as it is the simplest and cost-effective way of limiting the airborne spread of the highly contagious Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) (WHO, 2020).
Despite the strong surveillance of COVID-19 cases in Bhutan, there is limited data on facemask waste generation and management in the country since the emergence of the pandemic. With a substantial amount of facemask wastes generated due to improper disposal and management, the concerns are rising as the country is already grappling with an increasing volume of waste generated, thus posing challenges in providing adequate and efficient waste management services.
Therefore, to assess people’s behaviour towards disposal and management of used masks to minimize the impact, a study will be conducted. A total of 1572 general population aged between 18- 64 years who resides in Thimphu, Gelephu, Phuentsholing, and Samdrup Jongkhar will be selected for exploratory surveys.
The findings of this study would highlight sustainable approaches and well-documented management strategies and guidelines on effective facemask waste management during and after similar pandemics in the future in the context of Bhutan’s overwhelmed management system.
