At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, our shared inquiry into community continues to invite learners to explore what it means to belong and how each person contributes to the life of our school. From mapping our growing community to sharing ideas for the library, learners are encouraged to have a voice in shaping the environment around them.

In our Art Atelier, this sense of belonging became visible as learners across year levels worked alongside one another on a shared artwork, representing their ideas and observations of EtonHouse Bhutan International School and the country they call home.

Through these experiences, community is something learners experience, contribute to and build together, strengthening relationships and a shared sense of belonging across our school.

Our Upper Primary learners explored the possibilities of clay, developing techniques in shaping, joining and creating texture as their ideas took form in three dimensions.

Inspired by the Raffles Building, learners looked closely at its structure and considered how a strong foundation supports what is built above it. As they worked with clay, they explored balance, proportion and how individual forms connect to create a stable whole.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, clay becomes a language for learners to observe closely, represent their understanding and develop their thinking through making.

Our Upper Primary learners have been exploring factors, prime numbers and composite numbers through Singapore Maths, where understanding comes before procedure.

Using hands-on materials and visual representations, learners explored factor patterns and connected their discoveries to multiplication. Alongside this, regular practice with multiplication facts and number bonds helps build fluency, confidence and quick recall.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, Singapore Maths brings conceptual understanding and fluency together, developing confident and flexible mathematical thinkers.

Our weekly assemblies bring learners and educators together across year levels to share ideas, celebrate learning, listen to different perspectives and engage in shared inquiry. It is a time to pause, learn with and from one another, and strengthen relationships across the school.

Through our Whole School Inquiry, “What makes a school community?”, learners and educators reflect together on how relationships, shared experiences and individual voices shape our sense of belonging.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, assemblies create a space for reflection, connection and collective learning, where every voice has a place.

Our Primary learners have been exploring storytelling as part of their literacy learning, listening closely and thinking about how a story develops from beginning to end.

As they recalled key events, learners created their own illustrated books to represent their understanding of the story. Through drawing and early writing, they explored sequence, revisited important details and considered how their ideas could be communicated on the page.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, experiences like these build a deeper understanding of how stories are constructed, while giving learners meaningful ways to develop their own voice as readers, writers and storytellers.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, our Primary learners develop mathematical thinking through Singapore Maths, where understanding comes before procedure. Learners are encouraged to explore the why behind mathematical concepts, rather than simply memorising the how.

Using visual representations such as number bonds, part-part-whole models and number lines, learners explore number relationships, explain their thinking and develop strategies for solving problems, building a strong foundation for increasingly complex mathematical learning.

With over 16 years of teaching and mentoring experience across South Africa, Turkey, Cambodia, Japan, the Maldives, Thailand, Panama and Singapore, Lola Lai has developed a rich global perspective that now shapes her role as an Early Years educator at EtonHouse Bhutan International School. Her experience within the EtonHouse community has also given her a deep understanding of our approach to learning, complemented by the diverse cultures and communities that have shaped her journey.

Passionate about child-centred, inquiry-driven learning, Lola encourages children to investigate, think critically and make meaningful connections. She believes in giving learners the agency to explore their own questions, guided by the principle: “A good teacher shows children where to look, but not what to look for.”

Her curiosity extends beyond the classroom. A licensed safari field guide and PADI scuba diving instructor, Lola is also exploring ceramics and pottery, reflecting her belief that learners inspire learning and that curiosity has no boundaries.

We’re delighted to have Lola as part of our EtonHouse Bhutan International School community.

At EtonHouse Bhutan International School, our Early Years learners began their first inquiry with a place that was new to them: their school.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, we recognise the environment as the third teacher. As children explored the school, they observed how spaces connected and curiosity began to unfold, with questions such as “What is upstairs?”, “Can we have a science lab?” and “When can I start coming on the bus?”

Through maps and observational drawings, children revisited what they had seen and represented their growing understanding of their new environment.

As they explore, question and represent their ideas, an unfamiliar space gradually becomes a place of connection, discovery and belonging.
