INDUSTRY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE:
My name is Kunga Choden and I am a 4th year student pursuing Bachelor's of Science in Data Science at Sherubtse College. The time spent studying here has been a significant experience as I have been able to master both data and technology, as well as real-world problem solving skills. In particular, the programme has exposed me to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, which remain my areas of interest and professional ambitions in the last several years.
After the completion of my internship at the GovTech Agency, I was given a chance to work in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Division. In the course of this experience, I had an opportunity to work on the creation of a multimodal AI system to identify bird species and monitor biodiversity in Bhutan. This project enabled me to use the information I have acquired in the classroom to the real-life issues, through work with image, audio, and structured data, training machine learning models, and connecting them to a web-based platform.
The internship immensely supplemented my studies as it helped to enhance my technical and problem-solving skills. It also made me realize how data science and AI can be employed to contribute to environmental conservation and national development.
I am thankful as I have had a wonderful learning experience in the Sherubtse College that promotes the use of new technologies and empowers students to have the experience. It is opportunities like these that make me want to keep learning and be able to make a significant contribution with the use of data and technology."

FACULTY IN FOCUS:
We are delighted to celebrate the return of Dr. Karma Dorji, who joined us in mid-2025 after successfully completing his PhD in Data Science with specialization in Smart City Technology from Naresuan University, Thailand, under the prestigious King’s Scholarship.
Completing a PhD within just three years is no small feat — it reflects exceptional technical strength, academic focus, and disciplined scholarship. Dr. Karma’s research in Smart City Technology and big data systems now adds a powerful new dimension to our School’s academic and research landscape.
With a strong foundation in Computer Science, Dr. Karma has been a committed member of the teaching faculty since 2011, contributing significantly to the erstwhile BSc in Computer Science and BSc in Data Science programmes. His transition into the Data Science came at a pivotal moment — just as the college embarked on a major academic transformation with the launch of the Bachelor of Data Science and Data Analytics programme. Timing, as they say, is everything — and his expertise arrived exactly when it was needed most.
Known for being smart, efficient, and remarkably composed, Dr. Karma has a rare ability to handle complex responsibilities with clarity and conciseness — no unnecessary stress, no unnecessary noise. Tasks get done. Problems get solved. Systems get optimized.
But beyond the technical brilliance lies something equally valuable — his warm, jolly, and fun-loving personality. Kind-hearted and approachable, he brings not just intellectual depth but genuine friendship to the School. His vibrant personality blends effortlessly with his cool and confident presence — proof that smart city expertise and good vibes can indeed coexist. 😉
Feeling stressed? Go find Dr. Karma. Chances are, you’ll walk away relaxed, smiling, and unexpectedly enlightened.
Beyond his research in smart cities and big data technologies, you might find him enjoying a game of football or engaging in Bhutanese traditional sports — reminding us that balance, like good data architecture, is essential.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Karma Dorji on this remarkable achievement and welcoming him into this new chapter with the School of Data Science & Data Analytics.
Welcome home, Dr. Karma!

***INVITATION***
Dear faculty, staff, and students of Sherubtse College,
The School of Data Science and Analytics warmly invites you to celebrate International Pi Day (3.14) with us on March 14, 2026 at Sherubtse College.
Why celebrate π? Because it’s irrational, never-ending, and somehow still perfectly well-rounded—a bit like some of our deadlines and meetings! 😄 But beyond the humor, Pi Day is a fun way to appreciate the beauty of mathematics and spark curiosity about numbers that shape our world.
Come join us for a few light and engaging activities, including a Pi Digit Memorization Challenge, a Math-themed Relay Race, and other fun mathematical moments.
Whether you love mathematics, tolerate it, or are still recovering from it, there will be something for everyone. Your presence will make the celebration more lively and meaningful.
📍 Venue: Sherubtse College
📅 Date: March 14, 2026, 9:00 AM onwards.
Let’s come together and prove that mathematics can be fun, social, and slightly irrational too.
We look forward to seeing you there!

STUDENT IN FOCUS:
"My name is Manita Gurung, a 3rd year student currently pursuing Bachelor of Data Science and Data Analytics (DSDA) at Sherubtse college. We are the first batch to pursue this modified course in data science and this course is especially designed to provide us with the skills and knowledge to prosper in the digital world that is rapidly changing. We were given a strong foundation in data science, statistical computing, and python programming during our first year. Along with a strong foundation, we were given projects which helped us to work towards handling and analysing real-world data.
All the modules are well-designed for us because they help each student not only to learn but also gain practical experience with projects, develop analytical problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Our college provides a positive and rewarding educational environment. Our college’s strongest point is our devoted and knowledgeable faculty members, who are passionate in their fields and genuinely care about our learning and our growth. I have been able to develop strong theoretical and practical foundations because of their approachable nature and mentorship. Sherubtse’s excellent facilities make our learning experience more enjoyable.
Apart from academics, our college also promotes student involvement in other activities through many units. I have been actively involved in the Art Unit, Social Services Unit and Bhutan Youth Foundation. I have been able to develop personally and make a significant contribution to the campus through these units. Overall, Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan has helped me become a well-rounded, ready for future job market student with the perfect combination of innovation, academic knowledge, and personal growth."
