Amidst the increasing apprehension due to a temporary vacancy in the Physics teaching position at Karmaling Higher Secondary School, Samdrup Jongkhar, Acting Principal Mr. Khem P Thapa devised an ingenious plan to keep the students actively involved.
Mr. Khem proactively reached out to Jigme Namgyel Engineering College, seeking their assistance in mobilizing their teaching resources to the school. The objective was to introduce practical applications of physics, aligning with the curriculum, and ensuring meaningful engagement of the students.
Dr. Tshewang Lhendup, the President, and the management of Jigme Namgyel Engineering College graciously extended their support in this critical situation. Two lecturers, Mr. Deo Raj Biswa and Ms. Srijana Gajmer, from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, volunteered to visit the school and facilitate hands-on learning experiences, thereby supplementing the theoretical aspects of applied physics.
A total of 131 students, studying in classes 11 and 12 Science, were direct beneficiaries of the 16-hour course and hands-on workshop, which encompassed an introduction to theoretical concepts followed by hands-on experience in the wideband areas of Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, Microcontroller programming, Automation and Satellite communication.
The students were introduced to the theoretical concepts from their curriculum and furthermore, extended to developing these concepts into projects on the popular Microcontrollers; Arduino and STEMSEL runlinc.
Some of the activities carried out were:
-Programming in Arduino platform.
-Programming with STEMSEL microcontrollers on runlinc webpage.
-IoT projects using Runlinc for:
-Home Automation with automatic temperature sensing and control.
-Automatic Street lighting.
-Sensor-based burglar’s alarm and information system.
-Satellite tracking and data acquisition using Myriota Satellite Transmit Sensors in Australia.
-Drone flight Control and photo acquisition in Adelaide Australia, from Bhutan.
The school administration and students enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity and vowed to actively participate in upcoming projects and educational endeavours. The Bhutan STEM Society has promised to facilitate knowledge sharing through complimentary workshops and webinars on STEM platforms.
Stay tuned for future opportunities to stay engaged.
