Mr. Yeshi Singye from the Civil Engineering Programme successfully participated in a study visit to Karigar Shala Trust from 15th to 16th April 2026 funded by ECRUL. The institute is widely recognized for its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional construction practices through hands-on learning and skill development.
During the visit, the participant gained valuable exposure to sustainable building techniques such as sandstone masonry, rammed earth wall construction, and adobe-based load-bearing systems. The training emphasized the importance of locally available materials and indigenous knowledge in achieving environmentally responsive and cost-effective construction.
Key highlights included the observation of innovative methods like mud-roll ceilings and a uniquely restrained cantilever roofing system using tension cables. In addition, practical sessions on soil composition analysis and an introduction to colour theory enhanced the overall learning experience.
This opportunity marks an important step in strengthening practical knowledge and bridging the gap between traditional construction practices and modern engineering approaches. The experience is expected to contribute significantly to future academic and professional pursuits in the field of civil engineering.
The Civil Engineering Department, CST would like to express its sincere gratitude to Karigar Shala Trust for their invaluable support, knowledge sharing, and hospitality during the study visit. For further communication, they may be contacted at [email protected]

Guest Lectureโ Expanding Knowledge in Structural Design!
The Civil Engineering faculty and students attended an insightful guest lecture conducted by Ms. Mathilde Eliane Schelker and Ms. Kunsang Wangmo Ghashi from ETH Zurich on 7th April, 2026.
The visiting researchers reached the college on 6th April 2026 and will be staying until 13th April 2026, collaborating with CST on their research project and sharing their expertise on timber structures in the Himalayan region.
During the lecture, they shared their work on timber structures, mainly bridges, explaining design, analysis, and construction in real conditions. They also showed images of different timber bridge types, helping students understand various structural forms.
The session helped students connect theory with practical applications and highlighted the importance of innovation and planning in engineering.
We sincerely thank the visiting researchers and faculty for organizing this informative lecture .
