Dear Hubland:
You are in my dreams.

You may like to believe that bigoted statements made by men or women in power are justified perhaps because of your status as a heterosexual or one who is fortunate to carry a passport, and therefore to not be stateless by reason of violence or poverty. You may like to believe that gender itself is a clearly defined line between male and female or race between black and white, or citizenship between the declared boundaries of land and sea. You may like to believe that no discrimination or dehumanizing of certain classifications of society to which you may not belong will have a negative impact on your own rights to dignity or upon the rights of your children. You may like to believe that none of this affects you, that you are above it, or removed from it somehow, that you yourself are safe from discrimination and that your silence will secure your safety. Yet no matter your orientation, skin colour or what passport you hold, or even the size of your bank account, you will find out that these harmful attitudes toward the other are in fact largely manufactured and false, because sooner or later we are all the other or have the potential to be the other in some capacity. So you may like to believe such things, but you will find yourself to be wrong, and your inaction and blindness will be the agent by which all of us are wronged. Such attitudes turn in upon themselves to reveal the hatred within and this in turn is reflected in society by the violence and mental unhealthiness which is presently clear to everyone. If you claim to follow the teachings of Christ; if you say you want peace; if you believe you have power as a individual to be an agent of positive change; if there is choice then tell me: why would you not choose a loving disposition?
