Today in Riva del Garda saw an exciting 2 races concluding The Optimist World Championships 2021. The gold medal was fought hard for by the top sailors in gold fleet - neck and neck to the end. Congratulations to Brazilian Alex di Francesco Kuhl who won the title, with USA Gil Hackel in silver medal position and Italy's Alex Demurtas in Bronze.
Meanwhile, our Bahamian boys have done our country proud!!!🎉⛵️🎉 Joshua Weech, who actually participated in the world's in 2019, far exceeded his previous result, finishing 23rd in the silver fleet. 11 year old Finley McKinney Lambert achieved an amazing 8th in one of today's races, achieving an overall 20th in the bronze fleet, closely followed by Craig Ferguson in 21st. Zane Munro and Matthew Reid also did great in bronze a little further down the pack.
Compared with the majority of the top sailors at this event, our boys are somewhat inexperienced in these big fleet, international events. Coupled with unfamiliar fresh water lake sailing and wind/ weather conditions, they all did an incredible job this past couple of weeks battling against the world's top young sailors.
Additionally, they have all enjoyed themselves immensely! They have learnt a tremendous amount and will bring their experience on to many future competitions.
They all wish to thank all those back home who have been following them on social media and rooting for them!
They will certainly receive a hero's welcome when they return to Nassau!
The closing award ceremony is taking place this evening followed by big Italian celebrations no doubt! Photos to follow.
