📚📌There are words/jargon commonly used in The educational field that every parent should know!

Our term for the day is: “at-risk student”.

How would you know if your child is at-risk, if you did not know what the term meant? 😨😨😨

“At-risk student” is a term used to describe a student who requires temporary or ongoing intervention in order to succeed academically. Characteristics of at-risk students include emotional or behavioral problems, consistent truancy or being late, low academic performance, showing a lack of interest for academics, and expressing a disconnection from the school environment.

But, that’s not all! There are some characteristics that are more apparent than others, and those that are less than more obvious. There are also many factors that contribute to these characteristics. Before getting frustrated or angry about your child’s academic performance, consider any trauma, economic or geographical factors that create barriers to their education.

These students are considered to be “at-risk of academic failure”. But, does this mean that they can not overcome these barriers? ABSOLUTELY NOT! 🙅🏾‍♀️ These are the students who get back on their feet and display best another term we will discuss soon: “GRIT” ✨💪🏾.

🗣Be patient. Be honest about their challenges. Get them the support that they need.

Q: When should you stop checking your child’s homework?

A: Answers to this question are bound to be highly opinionated! There is no right or wrong answer to this question, but the topic is a matter of establishing independence, responsibility and trust!

Checking homework does not mean correcting mistakes for your child. It also does not mean that the manner in which you do it has to depict the style of a “helicopter parent”. You can still help your child learn from mistakes made and they can correct these mistakes on their own.

Parental support and attention is critical for your child no matter what age or level of academic responsibility they’re at. In that regard, we say find a balance! Ask questions, take a look, and show interest, but don’t do it for them.
