We came to Porto Santo Stefano thinking we just had to select a crew. Yet, over those days, we were reminded that sailing is, above all, about relationships.

78 people joined us onboard Translated 9. Different ages, countries, backgrounds and levels of experience. Most of them had never met before.

Our professional crew had a special role: not only to observe, but to teach. To explain a manoeuvre, answer questions, guide without taking over, share the experience of those who have already crossed oceans on this boat.

And the applicants did the same with each other.

They listened. Helped. Asked questions. Made mistakes. Tried again. Shared meals, stories, rides and plenty of laughs.

There was very little competition. Much more curiosity.

Because a good crew is not simply made of good sailors. It is made of people who know how to learn from each other, trust each other and make space for each other.

For a few days, we had the privilege of watching those relationships begin. And we learned something from them too.

This is where a crew starts.

We believe in humans.

The tryouts are over. 🥹

And now comes one of the hardest parts: deciding who will continue this journey with us on board. 🌊⛵️

Over these days, we met so many people who embody what we call the Translated Spirit: talented, curious, resilient, humble, generous, ready to learn and willing to become part of something bigger than themselves.

Choosing a crew will mean choosing only a few people. But we don’t want that choice to divide this community. Translated9 has never been only about the people on the boat. 🌞

It is also about all the people following from shore, sharing the story, supporting the crew, bringing their energy, ideas and skills into this project. We want the connections born during these tryouts to keep growing.

We hope to build a network of people who believe in this adventure, whether they cross an ocean with us or follow every mile from land. And in return, we want Translated9 to give you something worth staying for: a story to believe in, to feel part of, and hopefully, one day, to call your own.🌬️

For now, we’re taking a little time to make our decisions. You’ll hear from us soon.

Until then, thank you!!!

For showing up. For trusting us. For bringing your stories, your courage and your energy aboard. For saying “yes” when everybody else would have say “wait”.

Some of you will sail with us. We hope all of you will stay with us. 🩵

We believe in humans. 🌊

Today, Carlo Borlenghi has set sail for another world.

Carlo was one of the greatest sailing photographers of all time. He changed the way generations have seen the sea, transforming wind, light, and waves into stories that will outlive us all.

For us at Translated 9, it was a privilege and an honor to have our journey seen through Carlo’s eyes. His photographs became part of our story, capturing the spirit of the people aboard. The Translated spirit.

What we’ll remember most, though, is the person behind the camera.

Even after a lifetime at sea, he was always the first to reach the harbor and the last to stop shooting, asking for just one more hour on the water to catch the final light, the final wave, the perfect shot.

He remained curious like a child. When we told him about AI, he didn’t react with fear or nostalgia. He immediately saw another frontier to explore. He dreamed of creating the “impossible photographs” he had never been able to take. And he did. He turned them into an exhibition, using AI to bring those impossible images to life.

We wish life had given Carlo more time.

Because he would have taken many more “impossible photographs”, with the immense talent that made him one of a kind.

We’re looking for the people who keep showing up when things get hard. 🌞

Adventure is only the beginning. What matters is curiosity. Humility. Resilience. The willingness to learn. The ability to trust others with something bigger than yourself.

If that sounds like you, maybe you’ve been looking in the right direction all along. We believe in humans that never give up.

Applications are still open.

What if the next chapter of your life began at sea? 🤪 Join our crew for the Ocean Globe Race 2027.

We are looking for people ready to test themselves, learn fast, and become part of something bigger than personal achievement.

We’re assembling a crew of adult women and men, composed of one-third professionals and two-thirds non-professionals, as set out in the Ocean Globe Race rules. Experience and eligibility requirements vary by role.

Applicants are evaluated on their mission fit, motivation, and specific technical skills, including immigration procedures, photography, and multimedia communication. The selection process assesses candidates on their resilience, humility, and coachability, as well as their ability to contribute to the crew’s success beyond personal performance.

🌞 Participation is free. Translated covers all expenses during the regatta for selected participants.
🌞 Professional sailors receive a competitive salary and insurance.
🌞 During the trial phase all applicants cover the cost of traveling to the boat.
🌞 Translated provides food and 1 night of accommodation.
