Criado pela Gurgel Motores, o modelo surgiu como uma proposta ousada para a época.

O nome Itaipu foi escolhido como referência direta à usina hidrelétrica, reforçando o conceito de uma energia limpa, abundante e brasileira. Mais do que um experimento tecnológico, o veículo representava a tentativa de unir inovação, sustentabilidade e identidade nacional em um único projeto.
