🇧🇷 In Brazilian Portuguese, “small” doesn’t always mean small.

Ever wondered why Brazilians say cafezinho, probleminha, or rapidinho?

The endings -inho/-inha and -ão do much more than change the size of a word. They can express affection, soften a request, intensify meaning, show admiration—or even add a little irony.

For example:

☕ cafezinho → a friendly coffee ritual, not necessarily a tiny coffee
😬 probleminha → “a little problem”… that might actually be very serious
🚗 carrão → an impressive car, not simply a large one
⚡ rapidinho → really quickly

Our latest Falando blog post explains the patterns, the cultural context, and some common traps for Portuguese learners.

Learn the endings. Then learn what Brazilians actually mean by them.

brazilian group chat energy 🇧🇷

“tô chegando”

bestie you are on the MOON.

the rocket is still in the box. 😭

bro sent an affirmation instead of a location.

tô chegando = “I’m almost there.”
tô is the informal form of estou.

the Portuguese is correct. the coordinates are concerning.

Hard Portuguese is not always helpful Portuguese.

If you are looking up every few words, you are not really listening anymore — you are decoding. The better target is Brazilian Portuguese you can almost understand: enough context to follow the meaning, with just enough new language to stretch you.

A cooking video. A graded story. A familiar football match. Fifteen minutes a day from one voice you can follow can do more than an hour of linguistic static.

Our new guide explains comprehensible input, what it looks like at each level, and how to make it stick.

Read it here:

Some learners understand Brazilian Portuguese in months; others stall for years. Comprehensible input explains the gap, and Krashen only tells half the story.

You walk past the sofa. Your little toe catches the leg. For a moment, you forget every language you know. 🦶💥

Here are 6 Brazilian Portuguese phrases for when the words come back:

🇧🇷 Ai, meu dedinho! → Ow, my little toe!
🇧🇷 Que dor! → That hurts!
🇧🇷 Droga! → Damn it!
🇧🇷 Não acredito! → I can’t believe it!
🇧🇷 Quem pôs isso aqui? → Who put this here?
🇧🇷 De novo, não! → Not again!

“Who put this here?” is especially useful when the furniture has been in the same place for five years. 😂

What do you say in your language when this happens?

We usually teach Portuguese for things like ordering coffee, taking the bus, and getting a haircut.

But you can never be too prepared. 🤖👽

So here are 6 Brazilian Portuguese phrases for a robot-alien invasion:

Nós viemos em paz — We come in peace
Não atirem! — Don’t shoot!
Precisamos de ajuda — We need help
Onde f**a o abrigo? — Where is the shelter?
Dá pra negociar? — Can we negotiate?
Vamos embora daqui — Let’s get out of here

Will you ever need these? Hopefully not.

A fluent Portuguese speaker can receive a disappointing Celpe-Bras result—not because their Portuguese is bad, but because they answered a different question from the one the exam was asking.

Celpe-Bras isn’t a traditional grammar test. It tests whether you can use Brazilian Portuguese to accomplish a specific task for a specific audience, in the correct format and under time pressure.

In our new article, we explain what we’d do differently when preparing for the exam, including:

📝 Why you should take a full mock exam in your first week
⏱️ How to structure a realistic three-month study plan
🗣️ Why the oral section needs much more practice than most learners give it
🎯 How audience, genre and purpose affect your score
⚠️ Three common preparation mistakes that can cost you points

You can also take a complete Celpe-Bras mock exam on Falando, including the written and oral sections, real exam timing and evaluation using the official 0–5 scale. One complete mock is included in the 7-day free trial.
