International One-Meter (IOM) is a class of radio-controlled sailboat racing where all boats are limited to one meter in length, so skill and tactics matter more than money or design advantages. Sailors control their boats from shore, racing them around buoys much like full-sized yachts. Boats are so precisely balanced that sailors often carry tiny strips of tape or even bits of Blu Tack to adjust weight by just a few grams—moving it a couple of centimeters can noticeably change how the boat handles in different wind conditions.
Why SUI protests if they are miles behind and not gaining anything from AUS and CAN slowing down 20m. On one hand it is true, but also SUI had their own close side by side race with SWE. So the least they want to do is to sail around boats that need to give them way. You cannot be a pushover in this league…
Penalty FRA, windward boat not keeping clear (Rule 11). Mark-room rules (Rule 18) and obstruction rules (Rule 19) do not apply, because boats are approaching to start (see RRS Part 2, Section C Preamble). DSQ penalty (aka black flag) instead of “fall behind penalty” is an umpire policy to discourage teams from this maneuver, since it is dangerous one and creates substantial risk of high speed / high impact collisions. Often this situation is called “barging” in sail racing.
Btw about foul language - I had a video last year about what is accepted and when would umpires step in with penalties for the language - wanna get that explainer again? Hit me up in the comments…
