𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬
The UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society recently ended the Mathematical Sciences Month 2025, highlighting the utility and capability of mathematical sciences to be used in mapping the world. This year is the second iteration of the Mathematical Sciences Month after the previous Mathematical Sciences Week was expanded to a month-long celebration. The theme “From Equations to Exploration: Mapping the Universe with Mathematical Sciences” showcases the use of the mathematical sciences in surveying and charting the world. From natural phenomena to the social sciences, the Mathematical Sciences play an astounding and indispensable role in allowing people to collate, plot, and interpret the data necessary in these fields so that the knowledge of these fields may advance even further. In line with the organization’s goal of cultivating deeper appreciation and wider application of the mathematical sciences, it has facilitated several events such as, “MATH 27: A MASSter Tutorial”, the 49th Annual Search for the UPLB Math Wizard, “STAT the Fact 2025”, “George.getClues()”, the National Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH) 2025, and a Teachers’ Seminar.
𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝟮𝟳: 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹
The MASSter: A MATH 27 Tutorial was conducted on October 2, 2025 and was open to all UPLB students. The tutorial seeks to prepare students for their examinations and cultivate their skills in key concepts in limits and derivatives. The 73 participants enjoyed the various insights, vast knowledge, and expert teaching of Samuel Bautista, an LRC Peer Tutor while munching on free snacks. The tutorial explored key concepts in MATH 27, arming the participants with the knowledge to face their examinations in the following days.
𝟰𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗣𝗟𝗕 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱
The 49th Annual Search for the UPLB Math Wizard is a competition that is open to all undergraduate students of UPLB. The competition takes place over the course of two rounds with three stages in total. The Apprentice's Aptitude Round, also known as the preliminary round, took place on the morning of October 4, 2025. 50 participants from various UPLB degree programs fought fiercely to become one of the top 15 apprentices in order to move to the final round. These top 15 apprentices then competed with each other on the first stage of the final round, the Evoker's Exhibition Round, narrowing the competition even further to only the top 6 evokers. These 6 evokers proceed to face off against each other in an intense final round, the Archmage's Ascension Round, which determines the final winners who have proven themselves to be the most skilled Math Wizards.
The Top 3 are then awarded with the titles “Math Wizard”, “Math Sorcerer”, and “Math Novice” respectively. Mark M. Tangalin from BS Applied Mathematics is this year’s Math Novice, while Jay Lord M. Ugaddan from BS Mathematics is this year’s Math Sorcerer, and Lance Chrysler V. De Jesus from BS Computer Science is the winner of the title of Math Wizard in the 49th Annual Search for the UPLB Math Wizard.
𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱
STAT the Fact: Infographic Making Contest 2025 is an online infographic making competition that took place during the Mathematical Sciences Month 2025, open to all Junior and Senior Highschool students. This competition exemplifies this year’s National Statistics Month theme of “Accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Pace of Progress: Mobilizing Data for All,” allowing students to creatively communicate key statistical data related to SDG in an engaging infographic. Ultimately, this event aims to cultivate data literacy among the youth and to foster a deeper appreciation for statistics and its role in the progress toward better policies and sustainable development.
The competition was fierce, with 29 creative and informative entries. Janel C. Espenosa of Central Luzon Doctor’s Hospital Educational Institution won the people’s choice award with 425 votes. Mark Cristian M. Segarra of Don Manuel Rivera Memorial Integrated National Highschool took third place, Emilee Jelena A. Chua of Laguna College was second place, and Nicole Vincent C. Medina of Laguna College secured the victory, achieving first place in this STAT the Fact 2025.

𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲.𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀()
George.getClues() is a newly introduced event in the Mathematical Sciences Month with its first iteration held last November 3-7, 2025, every 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This is a campus-wide scavenger hunt for 20 cards with varying rarity, such as common, rare, epic, and legendary, hidden across the Physical Sciences Building and the New Math Building. These cards contained concept-based computer sciences questions and coding challenges.
Bonafide undergraduate and graduate students of the University of the Philippines Los Baños across all degree programs are eligible to participate in this event. Students may choose to participate either individually or in groups, with a maximum of three members per team. Prizes were awarded to participants who found cards and submitted a correct answer through Google Forms. The prizes varied based on the rarity of the card found:
• Common: Ballpen and Bluebook
• Rare: PhP 200
• Epic: PhP 500
• Legendary: PhP 1,000
𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 (𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱
The National Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH) 2025 was conducted on November 23, 2025 , this is a national mathematics quiz contest open to all Junior and Senior High School students and the centerpiece of this year’s Mathematical Sciences Month. During the preliminary round, 51 teams from 29 different schools nationwide participated in a competition where they face off against each other on their mathematical skills and knowledge, with only 20 teams successfully moving on to the final round. The top 20 scoring teams from the preliminary round then advance to the final round, where they will face each other in a timed oral examination consisting of three rounds of mathematical questions of varying difficulty to determine this year’s MATHEMATCH champions.
The second runner up for this year’s MATHEMATCH is Philippine Science High School - Main Campus (Team 2), consisting of Alessandro A. Albano, Michael Gerard R. Tongson, and Zion Skye Earl Carmelo C. Uy. The first runner up is Philippine Science High School - CALABARZONRC (Team 2) consisting of Aizen Nicko L. Adante, Reuben Joseph R. Felix, and Zac Harvey Gordula. Finally, the reigning champion for three years of the National Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH) 2025 is Philippine Science High School - Main Campus (Team 1) consisting of the champions Kyush Gian G. Cabilino, Mateo S. Espocia, and Magnus Rex C. Navarro.
𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀’ 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿
A teachers’ seminar for the participants’ coaches was held simultaneously with the competition’s preliminary round. The seminar presented various insights regarding gender in education and the theme of this year’s National Statistics Month.
It consisted of two intriguing sessions, the first being “The Role of Gender Equality and Empowering Women (SDG 5) in Education” with Mx. Aljohn P. Estrella. The second being “Statistical Tools for Measuring Gender Gap in Education” with Ma’am Joyce D. Grajo. The attendees were equipped with a critical theoretical framework on gender equity in academic settings and the useful statistical techniques required to measure and address current disparities through these sessions. The presented data directly informs participants’ efforts to achieve SDG 5.
This year, the UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society has remained steadfast in its mission to champion the significance of mathematical sciences within the Filipino community, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of its importance in exploring the phenomena in the world we live in. In alignment with its aspirations, the UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society has dedicated this Mathematical Sciences Month to showcasing the diverse applications of mathematical sciences in the acquisition of knowledge and appreciation of the Filipino nation and the world we live in. The Society envisions a future where mathematical sciences are appreciated as a tool for solving problems and celebrated as a foundation of critical thinking and national development.
