Around 1665, Johannes Vermeer painted a young woman looking over her shoulder. Centuries later, we still do not know who she was.
In fact, Girl with a Pearl Earring was probably not intended as a traditional portrait. It is a tronie, a type of painting common in the 17th-century Netherlands that focused on faces, expressions and characters.
Several theories about the girl's identity have emerged, but none has been proven. Even the famous earring remains a subject of debate. Its size and appearance have led scholars to question whether it actually represented a pearl.
Today, the painting is housed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and it continues to fascinate us precisely because of what Vermeer never revealed.
