This is the pistol used by Gavrilo Princip to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, an event that set off a chain reaction of alliances, ultimatums, and military mobilizations that led directly to the outbreak of the First World War.
On the morning of June 28, 1914, in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo, Princip, a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb nationalist, stepped forward from the crowd and fired two fatal shots, one striking Franz Ferdinand in the neck, the other hitting his wife, Duchess Sophie, in the abdomen. Both died within minutes, as they sat helplessly in their open-top automobile.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was not only the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne but also a significant figure in the fragile equilibrium of imperial Europe. Although he was regarded by some as a potential reformer who aimed to grant greater autonomy to Slavic regions within the empire, many Serbian nationalists saw him as a foreign occupier and a threat to their aspirations for a South Slav state.
Gavrilo Princip was a member of Young Bosnia, a revolutionary nationalist group inspired by pan-Slavic ideals. He was also supported by elements of the Black Hand, a secret Serbian military society with ties to Serbia’s intelligence network. Although the Serbian civilian government under Prime Minister Nikola Pašić did not officially approve the plot and even attempted to warn Austria-Hungary about a possible assassination plot.
The assassination sent shockwaves across Europe and was widely condemned. Austria-Hungary, already distrustful of rising Slavic nationalism, viewed the attack as a direct challenge to its authority and placed full responsibility on Serbia. Germany, its staunchest ally, pledged unwavering support in what became known as the "blank cheque", encouraging Austria to take decisive action.
Russia, bound to Serbia by cultural and political ties and seeing itself as the protector of Slavic peoples, condemned the assassination but cautioned Austria against aggression towards the Slavic.
France and Britain, allied with Russia also condemned the act and urged diplomacy to prevent a continental war. Nevertheless, the machinery of war had been set in motion.
On July 23, 1914, Austria-Hungary issued a severe ultimatum to Serbia. Although Serbia accepted most of the demands, its refusal to fully comply gave Austria the pretext to declare war on July 28, exactly one month after the assassination. Russia began mobilizing in defense of Serbia. In response, Germany declared war on Russia on August 1, and on France two days later. When German troops invaded Belgium to outflank French defenses, Britain entered the war. Within a matter of days, most of Europe was drawn into what would become a global conflict.
The pistol used by Gavrilo Princip is now preserved at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, the Museum of Military History in Vienna, Austria. It is displayed alongside other artifacts from that day, including the blood-stained uniform worn by Franz Ferdinand and the 1911 Gräf & Stift automobile in which the assassination occurred..
What began as a calculated act of political violence in a tense Balkan province would ignite a war that lasted over four years, claimed more than sixteen million lives, toppled empires, and permanently reshaped the political and psychological contours of the modern world.

The world record for the longest time without sleep is 264 hours (11 days), set by 17-year-old Randy Gardner in 1964.
In December 1963, Randy Gardner, a high school student in San Diego, California, undertook a sleep deprivation experiment for a school science fair. With the help of classmates and sleep researcher Dr. William C. Dement of Stanford University, Gardner remained awake for 11 days and 25 minutes (264.4 hours), from December 28, 1963, to January 8, 1964.
His experiment broke the previous record of 260 hours, set by Tom Rounds, a Honolulu DJ.
During the ordeal, Gardner experienced mood swings, memory lapses, hallucinations, and difficulty concentrating but he recovered without lasting effects. After finally sleeping, he reportedly slept for 14 hours straight, then woke up naturally and gradually returned to a normal sleep schedule within a few days.
The Guinness World Records later stopped recognizing sleep deprivation records due to the severe health risks involved.
I think being single is better than being in a toxic relationship. Self-love and independence are the best kinds of love.
Life keeps receipts. Every action… logged. Every seed… growing. Stay dangerous in silence.
