On the turntable today: Number One Du Senegal - Li Loumouye Nourou (1980)

Mbalax is Senegal's most popular dance genre, built on complex polyrhythms, driving basslines and latin influences.

Formed in 1976 after a dispute with bandleader Ibra Kassé from the legendary Star Band de Dakar, this ensemble became fierce rivals to Orchestra Baobab.

Featuring the legendary vocals of Mar Seck, this cut is an absolute masterclass in tropical groove and raw West African energy. Pulled this treasure out of the crates at during a recent London trip.
