In discussing online learning, a recent buzzword is “hybrid learning”. Whilst you may be more familiar with hybrid electric cars, "hybrid learning" is a term that has been around for around a decade in educational circles.

The term is now gaining momentum though, with the increasing degree in the use of information technology for delivery of courses and the interest in integrating electronic learning and traditional learning platforms together.

Hybrid learning, can be considered as the evolution of the discourse on blended learning, and this why there is somewhat confusion in the use of the two.

Blended learning focuses on the combination between online and offline learning. There is a distinct difference with hybrid learning, which refers to finding the right balance for you out of all the possibilities in learning, regardless if they are offline or online. However, in a hybrid learning environment, it is likely that the bulk of communication between instructors and students, is done online.

Different models have emerged to consider the optimum hybrid learning experiences, such as The Hybrid Learning Model by Masson, MacNeill, Murphy, and Ross (2017). It is evident that more models will follow, as hybrid learning spaces offer the next major foreground for investigation into learning across different contexts, to traverse the continuum of learning design.

Hello folks,

It's been a while, however we wanted to let you know we have been keeping busy working on different exciting projects, revolved around topics relevant to the web and meaningful engagement and participation in educational technology.

Meanwhile, we came across this very important report released annually by the EU, called the Education and Training Monitor:

https://ec.europa.eu/education/policy/strategic-framework/et-monitor_en.

This tool for researchers and practitioners examines the state of education and training across European states for the year passed.

Based on the key findings from the report, among the reported challenges for modernising schools, is the need to address and respond to the pace of technical and digital change effectively.

According to the Education and Training Monitor for 2017, there is a positive association in particular between disadvantaged students' achievements and the use of ICT outside of school for schoolwork and for general purposes, but only among those who use ICT less intensively.

It seems that disadvantaged students could especially benefit from a more systematic digital inclusion, meaning accessibility, development and certification of ICT skills which lead to core digital competences or digital literacy as it has prevailed to be called.

Educational Peaks is driven by such realizations and in acknowledgment of these challenges which are reflected in the educational system of all countries, focuses on empirically-based and theory-driven frameworks that will benefit all students, so as to empower them holistically. All research and theory undertaken by Educational Peaks, is implemented by Lab Operations, through breakthrough methods.

Even during summer vacation, we are diving into learning. Our focus is on educational technology, working towards research and practice in the following key areas (although not exhaustive of the topics of interest) that will determine the future of 21st century education:

- Connectivism and Personal Learning Networks
- Learning Management Systems
- Design Thinking for Higher Education
- Museum Multiliteracies Practice
- Maker Education
- Augmented Reality for STEAM

Our methodological approaches to explore the latter areas involve both qualitative and quantitative methods including mainly:

- Design Based Research (DBR)
- Learning Analytics
- Ethnography
- Surveys

Implemented through Lab Operations.
