Today, we launch a new publication, 'Building Europe's Skills for the Future’, showcasing projects that bring the Union of Skills to life across Europe.

These are the very opportunities we'll be showcasing during , from 12–17 October, when thousands of events across Europe and beyond will highlight how Erasmus+ helps people of all ages and backgrounds learn, grow and build skills for tomorrow.

Every year on 26 September, Europe celebrates something truly extraordinary: the incredible diversity of languages that make our continent so rich, so creative and so wonderfully diverse 🌍✨

Did you know? The EU has 24 official languages and about 60 regional and minority languages. Each one carries its own history, its own poetry, its own way of seeing the world. And every time you learn even a few words of a new language, you are taking part in one of the most powerful acts of connection and curiosity there is. 💬

🇪🇺 SOTEU 2026: Let’s look at Erasmus+.

In her State of the Union address last week, President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted what the EU has delivered over the past year and the work already underway to build Europe’s future.

Erasmus+ is an important chapter of that story. 🌍💙 By contributing to the Union of Skills, the programme helps people build the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to learn, work and thrive in a changing Europe.

🎓 Did you know that 18M+ mobility participants have taken part in Erasmus since 1987?

🌍 And that's not all: every year, 55,000 university students & staff benefit from mobility beyond the EU; 3,800+ of the best and brightest students worldwide are awarded Erasmus Mundus scholarships; and 40,000 young people take part in Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange between continents.

🇬🇧🇨🇭 And the family is getting bigger! Preparations are underway for the planned association of the UK and Switzerland to the programme, opening new opportunities to learn, train, teach and gain experience across Europe and further afield.

✨ And what’s next? We’re continuing to expand opportunities, strengthen skills and connect people across Europe and beyond.

AI is already finding its way into schoolwork.
But are we ready for what that means for learning and teaching? 🤖📚

Across the EU, 4 in 10 young people aged 16–24 already use generative AI for formal education. And nearly 2 in 3 education systems have top-level strategies or guidance on AI.

How we use AI matters. Using AI to get something done doesn’t necessarily mean we learn more. AI tools adapted to education settings can help improve learning. At the same time, the use of general-purpose AI models raises questions about critical thinking, overreliance on technology and the long-term impact on learning and cognitive development.

So, what does good digital education look like in an AI-powered world?

It means giving students the skills to use technology critically, while giving teachers the training and support they need to use it well.

Two new European reports look at what the evidence tells us about AI and digital education and will help shape the forthcoming Education Package, planned for November 2026.

Today marks an important step for literacy in Europe: the launch of the European Literacy Coalition. 📚

The Coalition creates a new space for cooperation between governments, educators, libraries, businesses, researchers, civil society and other partners working to strengthen literacy across Europe.

As part of the Action Plan on Basic Skills and the Union of Skills, it will support action through policy advice, research, capacity building and awareness-raising, with a focus on inclusion and equity, early literacy, digital challenges and support for educators.

Literacy is key to learning, participation, critical thinking and social cohesion.
