As we observed the International Mother Language Day, remembered our language martyrs with respect, expressed our love for our mother tongue and urged the government to ensure the use of Bangla in all spheres of life, including in higher education, we seemed to have forgotten about many of the indigenous communities of the country, whose mother language are facing the threat of being lost forever. As The Daily Star reported on Sunday, 14 indigenous languages—Kondo, Kharia, Koda, Soura, Mundari, Kole, Malto, Khumi, Pangkhua, Rengmitcha, Chak, Khyang, Lusai, and Laleng (Patro)—are on the verge of extinction because the number of their users have diminished. According to experts, a language is considered to be endangered when it is spoken by less than 5,000 people. Sadly, the situation of the languages we are talking about is so dire that they are now spoken by only 10 to 12 elderly people of their communities.

As Unesco describes, "a language disappears when its speakers disappear or when they shift to speaking another language—most often, a larger language used by a more powerful group." While this could be a major reason why these 14 languages are in such danger, there must be other economic, religious and social factors that contributed to this situation. By now we know how the dominance of the Bangla language over other indigenous languages in the hills and plainlands has led many indigenous communities to speak Bangla instead of their own language. Another major threat that these languages face is that they are not used to educate the children from these communities. Although every child has the right to study in their mother tongue up to the primary level in our country, not much effort has been made to ensure that. Moreover, the languages which do not have their own alphabets face even greater threat of going extinct compared to those that have alphabets. Observing the International Mother Language Day will be all the more meaningful when all the indigenous people of the country are able to speak their mother tongue and get educated in their own language. A lot of effort is needed from the government and other stakeholders to ensure this. And steps also need to be taken to preserve the languages that are now spoken by only a few elderly people of the communities. Only documenting these languages is not enough to save them. We think forming a language commission to save the endangered languages, as suggested by experts, would be a wise decision.

২৮। It is time for some self-examination-এখন কিছুটা আত্ম-জিজ্ঞাসার সময় হয়েছে;
২৯। While we can rightfully take pride in the fact-পক্ষান্তরে, ঘটনাটিতে আমরা ন্যায়সঙ্গতভাবে/আইনগতভাবে গর্ববোধ করতে পারি;

৮২। only 34 out of the 3,201 reference books are in Bangla-৩ হাজার ২০১টি রেফারেন্স বইয়ের মধ্যে মাত্র ৩৪টি আছে বাংলায়;
৮৩। according to the syllabus of the departments-বিভাগগুলোর সিলেবাস অনুযায়ী;
৮৪। Seven of the 13 departments of these faculties -এসব অনুষদের ১৩ বিভাগের ৭টিতে;
৮৫। do not have a single reference book in Bangla-একটাও বাংলা রেফারেন্স বই নেই;
৮৬। This poses as a major obstacle-এটা বড় ধরণের বাধা/প্রতিবন্ধকতা/অন্তরায় তৈরি করে;
৮৭। to students who-সেই সব শিক্ষার্থীদের যারা;
৮৮। have studied in Bangla most of their lives-তাদের জীবনের বেশিরভাগ বাংলায় পড়ালেখা করেছে;
৮৯। and are suddenly having to learn from English texts-এবং হঠাৎ ইংরেজি পাঠ থেকে শিখতে বাধ্য হচ্ছে;
৯০। The matter needs immediate attention of the DU authorities-বিষয়টিতে ঢাবি কর্তৃপক্ষের দ্রুত নজর দেয়া দরকার;
৯১। However-কিন্তু;
৯২। in our effort to enrich and expand the use of Bangla countrywide-সারাদেশে বাংলার মানোন্নয়ন ও ব্যবহার বৃদ্ধি করার আমাদের প্রচেষ্টায়;
৯৩। we should not ignore-আমাদের উপেক্ষা করা উচিত নয়;
৯৪। the need to preserve and help flourish the languages of many other ethnic communities-অন্যান্য অনেক নৃগোষ্ঠী সম্প্রদায়ের ভাষাকে সংরক্ষ করার ও সমৃদ্ধিলাভে সাহায্য করার প্রয়োজনীয়তা;
৯৫। whose languages and cultures-যাদের ভাষা এবং সংস্কৃতি;
৯৬। are being obliterated over time-সময়ের পরিক্রমায় নিশ্চিহ্ন হচ্ছে;

Our love for the mother tongue must go beyond rituals

As we observe the 69th Anniversary of the Mother Language Day, we pay our deepest respect to those who laid the groundwork for the movement to establish the right to speak in our own language, to those who led the movement and to those who made the supreme sacrifice on this day sixty-nine years ago. But seldom do we comprehend the significance of this day. We forget that 1952 not only asserted our nationhood and accorded a pride of place to Bangla internationally, it also established the syncretic character of the nation and acted as the precursor to our independence. But how much have we been able to fulfil the dreams of the language martyrs? It is time for some self-examination.

While we can rightfully take pride in the fact that this day has been recognised universally by the UN as International Mother Language Day, we will not be remiss in suggesting that the language languishes from neglect both at the individual and official levels. There is little of substantive work in making the use of Bangla widespread in the country and at all levels of education, particularly higher education and our administration. Proficiency in other mother languages is taken with pride. Apathy towards the language has become a part of the elitist culture. While we resisted the Pakistani rulers in their effort to dilute our culture, we ask how much have we been able to retain the pristine character of the culture that is germane to this land?

Our service to our mother language must go beyond words and manifest into actions. Admittedly, a second language is essential in today's globalised world, but its practice and learning cannot come at the expense of Bangla. We suggest that the teaching curricula be revised at all levels of our education system. One of the areas that needs to be addressed is our higher education, where Bangla is neglected totally as a medium of instruction. Lack of adequate books in Bangla, both in original and translated, is one of the main reasons for this situation. A look at the situation in the principal seat of higher learning in Bangladesh, Dhaka University, will give a clear depiction of the matter. Reportedly, except for the Department of Bangla literature and a few others in the arts faculty, not many books written or translated in Bangla can be found in the academia. At Dhaka University's sciences, biology, earth and environmental, and engineering and technology faculties, only 34 out of the 3,201 reference books are in Bangla, according to the syllabus of the departments. Seven of the 13 departments of these faculties do not have a single reference book in Bangla. This poses as a major obstacle to students who have studied in Bangla most of their lives and are suddenly having to learn from English texts. The matter needs immediate attention of the DU authorities. However, in our effort to enrich and expand the use of Bangla countrywide, we should not ignore the need to preserve and help flourish the languages of many other ethnic communities, whose languages and cultures are being obliterated over time. That would be the best way of showing our gratitude and respect to the Language Martyrs and heroes.

The story of a woman being trafficked into the UK by a human trafficking network in cahoots with immigration police personnel at Sylhet Osmani International Airport raises a number of questions and concerns. According to a report published by this newspaper on Friday, the woman was tricked into travelling to the UK by a couple of British nationals, but it is how she managed to travel there that is most alarming.

In order to traffic her to the kingdom, British citizen Zain Deen travelled to Bangladesh on February 8, 2019. But along with him, he had a fake passport with the woman's picture and a fake name assigned for her. According to officials, the passport had an entry-into-Bangladesh seal stamped at Osmani International Airport, even though nobody was the bearer of that passport, and thus without the mandatory photograph of the bearer taken at immigration. Although how this happened still remains a mystery, even the investigators at CID admit that this could not have been possible without the involvement of the immigration police personnel. But the story does not end there.

On February 14, Zain managed to board a flight to the UK along with the woman. And it was at the UK's Heathrow Airport that the fake passport was finally identified by UK immigration police, who sent the woman back on February 17. Again, how the woman managed to get through the immigration at Sylhet airport and board a flight remains unclear; however, what is clear is that further involvement of immigration police was required for her to do so. What this means is that security at Sylhet airport has somehow been seriously compromised due to the involvement of immigration police with this human trafficking network. Who or how many people within the immigration police were involved in this unholy alliance is still unknown to us, but it has been reported that a number of immigration officers have been questioned by the CID, who have identified some officials involved in the crime.

This case is a clear example of the danger that is posed to our safety due to security failures at our airports. If it wasn't for the immigration police at Heathrow airport, the involvement of our immigration officers with this crime—and the fact that there has been a serious breach in security protocols at the Sylhet airport—may never have been discovered.

And this further begs the question whether more such vulnerabilities exist throughout the rest of our airports, and whether it is just that they have not been identified yet. Either way, the fact that something like this could possibly happen demands serious investigations and a re-evaluation of the state of security at our airports as well as a rethinking of what more can be done to bolster it.
