এবার ২০২৪ সালে কেমিস্ট্রিতে নোবেল পেয়েছে অ্যালগরিদম বেজড যুগান্তকারী আলফা ফোল্ড এর আবিষ্কারকগন। প্রোটিন হলো সবচেয়ে কমপ্লেক্সে বায়োমলিকিউলস এবং একি সাথে অনেক বেশি আনস্টেবল। প্রোটিন এর স্ট্রাকচার ও ফোল্ডিং এর সাথে এর কাজ বা ফাংশন অনেকাংশেই নির্ভরশীল। তবে এক্সপেরিমেন্টালি প্রোটিনের ডিটেইলস স্ট্রাকচার জানা যায় NMR অথবা X- Ray Crystallography এর মাধ্যমে, যেটা অনেক ব্যয়বহুল ও সময়সাপেক্ষ।

প্রোটিন নিয়ে মলিকুলার গবেষণার মুল সীমাবদ্ধতা হলো প্রতিটা জীবদেহে কয়েকশত, বা কয়েক হাজার প্রোটিন রয়েছে, এক্সপেরিমেন্টালি যার সবগুলোর স্ট্রাকচার জানা প্রায় অসম্ভব। কাজেই আলফা ফোল্ড যেটা করেছে,আমিনো এসিড বিন্যাস এর উপর ভিত্তি করে হুবহু প্রোটিনের স্ট্রাকচার তৈরি করেছে এবং বিগত কয়েক বছরে প্রায় 200 মিলিয়ন প্রোটিনের স্ট্রাকচার ডেটাবেইসে এ্যাড করেছে, যেটা ভবিষ্যতে প্রোটিন গবেষণাকে শত বছর এগিয়ে দিয়েছে। মুলত এটাই হলো একটা অসাধারণ AI বেসড আইডিয়া যা এক্সপেরিমেন্টালি অসম্ভব ছিলো।

এই হলো যুগান্তকারী সেই পেপার যেটা নোবেল পাওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা রেখেছে।

Alexander Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering penicillin. He saw that bacteria he had been growing on a culture plate had been killed in an area close to where a mould was accidentally growing. He isolated the mould and showed that it released a substance that inhibited bacterial growth. He named the substance penicillin after the name of the mould.

Fleming reported his ground-breaking results in the scientific paper 'On the antibacterial action of cultures of a Penicillium with special reference to their use in the isolation of B. influenzae', published in British Journal of Experimental Pathology in 1929.
