I have already submitted my biometric data when I last applied for a visa. Do I have to come in person and submit them again if I apply for a new visa?
Biometric data already collected for a Schengen visa are valid for 59 months from the date the biometric data capture was done. If you have already provided your biometric data for a previous successful Schengen visa application with one Schengen country, then you do not need to come in person to submit them again if you apply for a new Schengen visa, even with a different Schengen country. You will only have to provide the visa sticker number and photocopy of the visa as a proof during the new visa application procedure. The VIS is a common database to all Schengen countries. After expiry of 59 months, you have to provide fingerprint scans again. You can view the list of Schengen countries here.
This exemption does not apply to long stay visa applicants and applicants visiting the DROM-CTOM. Applicants have to go through the biometric data capture step for any new long stay visa application, even if they already submitted their fingerprints for a previous visa application

applicants not wishing to use the visa service of VFS Global may continue to submit their visa application forms directly to the Embassy of Switzerland in Astana. However, appointments for the Embassy also must be booked in advance via VFS Global. Due to limited resources at the visa section of the Embassy of Switzerland, the processing time can be considerably longer than for applications submitted directly to VFS Global. If no appointment was made in advance, the Embassy of Switzerland will not accept to receive a visa application form.
Especially during the visa high season (April to October), it is strongly recommended to book well ahead an appointment for the submission of a visa application as waiting times could be long.
Personal appearance at VFS Global (or at the Embassy) is required with few exceptions (e.g. children younger than 12 years) in order to have personal biometric data seized (10-digit fingers’ scan and a digital photograph). The biometrical data will be stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) for 5 years.
If digital fingerprints were previously collected and the Schengen visa was issued bearing the mention "VIS", then, in general, no new fingerprints are needed when applying for a new Schengen visa within the next 5 years. However, should the previously collected fingerprints proof to be of insufficient quality, the visa applicant upon information of VFS Global must have taken the digital fingerprints again.
Furthermore, if digital fingerprints were previously collected but no Schengen visa was granted, then new digital fingerprints are needed. Biometric data are not required from children below the age of 12 years.
The earliest date for submitting a visa application is 3 months before the start of the trip. A short-stay visa (also called uniform visa / visa C / Schengen visa) is for a period not exceeding 90 days over any 180-days’ period in the Schengen territory.
The visa application form is free of charge. It is available either at

Full of details about Schengen countries Biometric as from November 2, 2015 all applicants applying for a Schengen visa for the first time or applicants who have not previously given biometric data shall submit biometric data -ten fingerprints and a photo. Biometric data will be stored in the Visa Information System (VIS), which is an IT system that allows the Schengen States to exchange visa data. The main purpose of the VIS is to improve safety and to facilitate the issuance of visas and the control at external borders.
Visas applied before November 2, 2015 are valid without biometric data through the period of the validity.
After introducing the VIS, all applicants shall come to Visa Application Centre of Finland for biometric enrollment. Biometrics is requested only every 59 months; during 59 months the applicant can submit new visa applications without renewing the fingerprints. A visa application can be submitted via an accredited Tour Operator, but for the first application the applicant has to go to the VAC for biometrics.
It is important to note that if for some reason fingerprints cannot be found in the VIS, the applicant is requested to visit VAC to be fingerprinted again.
Applicant can request the fingerprints to be taken every time when applying for a visa for the following reasons:
To avoid prolonged processing time of the application if for some reason the fingerprints are not found in VIS.
For security reasons to confirm the identity of the applicant.
If applicant does not remember when fingerprints were taken last time or is not sure if fingerprints have been taken before.
