To create the realistic farm setting for Interstellar, Nolan chose to plant an actual cornfield instead of relying on CGI.
According to NerdVeda, the 500-acre cornfield was planted outside Calgary, Canada, and cost approximately $100,000 to grow.
This was a relatively small expense compared to the film’s overall budget of $165 million.
After filming wrapped, Nolan and the production team sold the harvested corn for $162,000, earning a $62,000 profit.
As Cinemablend notes, this unexpected return turned Nolan into a temporary corn farmer—an unusual but clever move that added authenticity to the film while offsetting production costs.
The cornfield appears prominently in the movie, especially in scenes involving Cooper’s family farm.
Nolan’s decision to use practical effects and real landscapes is part of his broader filmmaking philosophy, which favors realism over digital effects whenever possible.
