Children's Museum of the Arts
Children’s Museum of the Arts unites children and artists to create and share ambitious works of art. All 100% free.
Since 1988, Children’s Museum of the Arts has been changing the way people value our youngest artists and their aesthetic contributions to the world. By taking our programs directly into schools, CBOs, galleries, and public spaces, we continue to challenge and expand what a museum is.
Operating as usual

As the school year wraps up this month, we are pleased to unveil Emergency Exhibition: New Training for Future Artists and Art Lovers, an online collection of over 100 artworks by students aged 4-12 from CMA’s 2023-24 Emergency Arts Education Fund partners in New York City.
The works in this exhibition demonstrate the breadth of the experimental arts curriculum crafted and implemented by each of CMA’s Artists in Residence over the past year:
Hudson Guild
Chelsea, Manhattan
with Maria D. Rapicavoli
P396K Sid Miller Academy
Crown Heights, Brooklyn
with Niousha Kiarashi
Children’s Workshop School
East Village, Manhattan
with Noormah Jamal

‘Swimmy by Leo Leoni’ is created by kindergarten and first graders at PS33M Chelsea Prep in collaboration with CMA Artist Instructors Gonzalo Miñano and Larkin Grimm.
Children’s Museum of the Arts’ longstanding partnerships with New York City public schools embed free access to the arts directly into the community. Students work collaboratively with CMA Artist Instructors to create narrative films that exercise literacy skills through script-writing, character development, set design, and sound selection.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. With special thanks to NYC District 3 Council Member Erik Bottcher and Motoko Shoboji.

We’re proud to contribute to a cleaner, greener, more creative NYC by using supplies from Materials for the Arts to support our programming!
At Children’s Museum of the Arts, we use MFTA supplies to support our artist residency in NYC public schools, free after school artmaking classes at Pier 57, and annual block parties for NYC children and families.
Last year, Materials for the Arts diverted over 1.7 million pounds (!) of materials from landfill and provided them free of charge for arts nonprofits, social service organizations, and City agencies across the five boroughs.
Visit nyc.gov/mfta to learn more about this incredible resource.

For our third and final studio visit, CMA Resident Artist Maria D. Rapicavoli shows us around her studio at Elizabeth Foundation for The Arts and discusses her affinity for construction tools, her upbringing in Sicily, and sketching turtles.
In addition to her studio practice, Maria teaches after school art classes to elementary school students at Hudson Guild as part of CMA’s Residency for Experimental Arts Education.

We cannot adequately express our gratitude to Whitney Museum of American Art and the estate of Ruth Asawa for proving Maria’s students from Hudson Guild with a behind-the-scenes tour of the monumental Ruth Asawa Through Line show.
During their visit to the exhibition, students engaged Maria with thoughtful questions and even had the chance to create their own drawings in response to Asawa’s works.
A stalwart of the Chelsea community for nearly 100 years, Hudson Guild provides essential housing, education, and social services for the youngest members of its community. Hudson Guild is located just four blocks from the Whitney, but its students rarely get a chance to engage in the art world located on their doorstep – and we’re here to change that.

In 2023, we doubled down on our mission and pulled back the veil on the unparalleled artistic resources of NYC to connect young people with real artists from their communities. And we did it all 100% free.
Help us continue this mission in 2024. Only 12 hours left to give to double your impact!

Pictured: Noormah's fifth grade students at Children's Workshop School explore collage.

“When I first started teaching, I was afraid of the silence. In my first class, only 3-4 students asked questions. Now, most of my class asks questions – what we are doing next week, wanting to revisit assignments, noticing old drawing errors, learning and focusing on perspective, line quality, and composition. All of it is a joy.”
