Hey Data Enthusiasts! ๐ One piece of information often puzzles me most, that I'm always surrounded by Data๐ . Then I started to classify them, and some of those almost drove me insane.
๐งIf you are curious like me, then today I'm gonna clear some of your Data Confusion๐ค
๐ Let's tackle another common confusion: Discrete vs. Continuous Data! with confusing examples.
๐ค The "Confusing" Examples
The secret is to ask: "Can I break it down into smaller, meaningful, fractional units?"
Age๐: While we often treat age as discrete (counting whole years), age is truly continuous. You could be 25 years, 3 months, 2 days, and 1 second old.
Just like time, theoretically, Time is continuous.
Practically (when measured in fixed units): Itโs treated as discrete.
Money$$: Money is typically discrete. The smallest unit is a penny, creating distinct, countable steps. You can't have half a penny!
Shoe Size๐ผ๐ผ: Shoe size is a discrete variable, even though it includes half-sizes (e.g., 7, 7.5, 8). You can't have a shoe size of 7.23, as shoe sizes are standardized into specific, distinct increments. There's a clear gap between each size.
Bottom Line: If you're counting something whole and the gaps are clear, then it's probably Discrete. If you're measuring something on a scale, it's Continuous!
