Top 7 Tricks to Crack Fill-in-the-Blank Questions
1. Read the Question First
Always read the sentence with the blank before reading the passage.
This helps you know what to look for in the text.
2. Underline Keywords
Focus on names, dates, numbers, adjectives, or verbs in the question.
They will help you locate the answer in the passage.
3. Predict the Word Type
Guess if the answer should be a noun, verb, adjective, etc.
Helps you stay alert for the right kind of word while scanning.
4. Scan the Passage for Synonyms
IELTS often paraphrases. For example:
"cheap" might become "low-cost"
"increase" might become "rise"
Don’t look for exact words from the question!
5. Use Grammar Clues
Make sure your chosen word fits grammatically in the sentence.
Try reading the sentence aloud with the answer — does it sound correct?
6. Stick to the Word Limit
Read instructions! If it says “ONE WORD ONLY”, write only one.
Writing more = automatically wrong.
7. Practice with a Timer
Fill-in-the-blank questions are usually detail-based and can eat time.
Practice doing these under exam conditions to get faster.
