How do soft alluvial soils impact building safety during an earthquake?

Our 2nd-year civil engineering students are finding out by bridging geological science with structural engineering resilience!

Under the guidance of Lecturer Raisul Islam, undergraduate students Md. Saiful Islam, Md. Nurul Islam, and Md. Sharif Ahmed presented an impactful poster on "Earthquake Risk in Dhaka: A Geological Perspective" for their CE 2103: Engineering Geology and Geomorphology course.
Here are the key takeaways from their research:

• A Looming Threat: Dhaka is situated at the active interaction zone of the Eurasian, Indian, and Burmese plates. With no major rupture in the last 100 years, a significant seismic event is geologically overdue due to a growing "seismic gap".

• The Ground Beneath Us: The team showed that a building's safety depends heavily on its neighborhood's soil. Areas like Lalbagh, Kotwali, Mohammadpur, and Kamrangirchar are highly vulnerable due to soft alluvial deposits that drastically amplify bedrock motion.

• The Structural Impact: A severe earthquake could leave up to 60% of buildings with severe cracks and render half of the city's structures uninhabitable. The risk is heavily compounded by structural defects like soft-stories and building pounding.

The takeaway? We cannot change the geology, but we can change how we build. The students advocate for urgent soil stabilization, structural configuration controls, and proper urban planning.

The students of 4th semester section A (4A) from the Department of Civil Engineering, Northern University Bangladesh, successfully presented their Computer Aided and Drafting Sessional Posters, showcasing their technical skills, creativity, and practical understanding of building planning and design.

The presentations included detailed:
✅ Architectural Plans
✅ Elevation Views
✅ Sectional Drawings
✅ 3D Visualizations of Proposed Buildings

Students also demonstrated important engineering calculations such as:
📐 FAR (Floor Area Ratio) Calculation
📐 Maximum Ground Coverage Calculation
📐 Determination of the Maximum Number of Floors Permissible on the Selected Plot

Using their selected proposed sites, the students integrated design concepts with building rules and regulations to develop complete and realistic project proposals.

This session reflected the students’ dedication, technical proficiency, and growing expertise in architectural drafting and planning using AutoCAD.

পহেলা বৈশাখ ১৪৩৩ আয়োজনে আমরা Department Of Civil Engineering উপস্থাপন করেছি “নবরং নির্মাণী” যেখানে উৎসব, ঐতিহ্য ও আন্তরিক আপ্যায়ন একসাথে ধরা দিয়েছিল ভিন্নমাত্রায়।
রঙে, নকশায়, পরিবেশনায় এবং প্রতিটি আয়োজনের সূক্ষ্মতায় ছিল আমাদের সম্মিলিত শ্রম ও সৃজনশীলতার ছাপ। অতিথিদের জন্য পরিবেশিত প্রতিটি আয়োজনে ছিল আন্তরিকতা, আর পুরো পরিবেশজুড়ে ছিল বাংলা নববর্ষের প্রাণচাঞ্চল্য।
