The 2025 Nobel Prize laureates in Chemistry have created molecular constructions with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can flow.

These constructions, known as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases, or catalyse chemical reactions.

Scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar Yaghi won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the development of metal–organic frameworks," the award-giving body announced today (8 October).

🌐 There is a global inequality in urban flood exposure

The Global South is facing a disproportionately high urban flood risk, and this gap is set to widen.

The study by researchers at the Institute of Applied Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences assessed the impact of 1-in-100-year river flood events in cities across the globe.

They found that by 2100, flooding will hit the Global South much harder compared to the Global North:
🏙️ 2x more urban areas at flood risk
👥 ~5x more people exposed
🪙 2x more economies at risk

As the number of people living in urban areas continues to increase globally, identifying the people, places, and economies exposed to urban flood disasters can inform effective flood management and urban planning.

We live in an age of increasingly complex and interconnected global risks, and we are not sufficiently prepared.

🌐 A United Nations survey of experts from government, the private sector, civil society and academia found that mis- and disinformation is seen as the biggest current global risk, followed by rising inequalities and geopolitical tensions.

Looking to the future, respondents view AI and frontier technologies as the biggest risk for the next 6 years; a new pandemic for the 2030s; and a space-based event for the 2040s. 🚀

These risks are likely to compound other ongoing risks – like extreme weather events, economic disruptions, and conflict.

We must better understand future risks to manage them and reduce their impacts.
