Narrated: Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him)

Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) said in explanation of the following verse: “When your Lord brought forth from the loins of the children of Adam their offspring,” meaning that Allah brought them together and desired to form them in various forms. Then He gave them form and gave them the power of speech, so that they could speak. Then Allah took their covenant and made them bear witness about themselves. He asked them, “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes.” Then Allah said, “I call the seven heavens and the seven earths to witness against you, and I call your fathers to witness against you, so that you may not say on the Day of Resurrection, “We did not know this.” You know that there is no god but Me, and that you have no Lord but Me. So do not associate anyone with Me. Then I will send to you My Messengers, who will remind you of this promise of Mine. And I will send down to you My Book. Then they said, "We testify that You are our Lord and our God, we have no Lord but You, we have no God but You." They acknowledged this. Then Adam (peace be upon him) was raised above them, he began to look at them all. He saw in them the rich and the poor, the beautiful and the ugly. He said, "O Allah! What if You had made them all equal?" Allah the Almighty said, "I want My gratitude to be expressed through this distinction." Thus He saw the Prophets, all of them like lamps, a light shining on them. They were also bound by a special covenant regarding the fulfillment of the duties of Prophethood and Messengership. Allah the Almighty says, “We took the covenant of the Prophets up to Jesus, son of Mary.” Then Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Among those spirits was the spirit of Jesus (peace be upon him); Allah the Almighty sent it to Mary (peace be upon him). It is also narrated from Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) that the spirit entered through the mouth of Mary (peace be upon him).
