We are excited to share an inspiring message from Professor Mahbub Majumdar, the convener of the Jamal Nazrul Islam Memorial Winter School 2025, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences at BRAC University, and National Coach of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad.
The Jamal Nazrul Islam Memorial Winter School is a landmark event for Bangladesh, bringing together some of the brightest minds in theoretical physics to inspire and mentor young researchers and students. It represents a crucial step in building a strong foundation for cutting-edge science education and innovation in the country.
Professor Majumdar spoke about the importance of creating a self-reliant structure for scientific research and education in Bangladesh. Rather than waiting for breakthroughs from the West, it is vital to cultivate local talent and resources. This Winter School, with its focus on cosmology, black hole physics, and quantum field theory, provides a platform to empower the next generation of scientists.
He reflected on the legacy of Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam, a visionary who left a successful career in the UK to contribute to Bangladesh. As the founder of the Research Centre for Mathematical and Physical Sciences at University of Chittagong, Professor Islam became a symbol of dedication and excellence. His commitment to advancing science in Bangladesh has inspired many, including Professor Majumdar, who also returned from the UK to work towards strengthening the countryโs science and mathematics education.
Hosting world-class physicists and researchers at this school highlights Bangladeshโs potential to emerge as a leader in science and education within the Global South. This event is more than just a series of lecturesโit is an opportunity to build a community of innovators and problem solvers who will shape the future of science.
Professor Majumdar expressed his gratitude to BRAC University for its support in organizing this first-of-its-kind event, as well as to the sponsors, volunteers, and university leadership for their contributions. Their efforts have made it possible to provide free participation, accommodation, and meals for everyone attending the school.
Looking ahead, the goal is to nurture a generation of young researchers and scientists who will lead global advancements in science and technology. This Winter School is a step toward that vision, honoring the legacy of Jamal Nazrul Islam and inspiring a brighter future for Bangladeshโs scientific community.
